At Gallery 1: New work by Kim Jones. This show will include a different series of 15 drawings. These works incorporate imagined figures engaged in open-ended, sometimes bizarre narratives which, unlike the war drawings, are colorful depictions. Gallery 2: A second solo show of Gary Panter's work.In this exhibition Panter will present a Light Show, he calls 'Fog Window' or 'Mind Probe.' The Light Show uses common objects to produce light and shadow abstraction on a small backlit screen, accompanied by a cacophany of radio samplings.
Kim Jones
new work
gallery 1
New work by Kim Jones. Jones' work has been
exhibited in the US and Europe, including solo shows in New York, Los Angeles, and
elsewhere. Jones is primarily known for his performance work, drawings and
sculptures. For his "Mudman" performances, which have occurred on the street, in
subways, galleries, and museums, he transforms himself "into a sculpture that is both
aggressive and adaptive." (Jones) Using locally found sticks, cord, and tape he
constructs an irregular lattice which he wears, his body usually covered with mud. For
years he has also been making "War Drawings," a continuous series of
two-dimensional games played with pencil and erasures The drawings are most
often on paper but are sometimes worked directly on walls, occasionally through the
duration of an exhibition, thus becoming another sort of performance.
In the "War Drawings" I draw x's and dots, black tanks and white ones.
The[y]... fight each other for domination of the maze in which they live.
The 'troops' are moved - or killed - by erasing and redrawing them.
The remaining ghost image becomes a history of their movements.
(Jones)
This show will include a different series of 15 drawings (all roughly 22 x 30 inches, in
acrylic, ink and mixed media on paper) which Jones has been working on from the
early 70's until the present and which have never been exhibited. These works
incorporate imagined figures engaged in open-ended, sometimes bizarre narratives
which, unlike the war drawings, are colorful depictions. Some also include
appropriated collage images with references to the "Mudman." As in his "Mudman"
performances, these drawings are both aggressive and adaptive.

Gary Panter
light show
gallery 2
A second solo show of Gary Panter's work. In
the mid-70's in Los Angeles, Panter began publishing the darkly humorous cartoon
adventures of his "Jimbo" character which became popular in punk and new wave
publications such as RAW, and whose adventures continue today. In the late-70's he
developed the graphic style for "PeeWee's Playouse" on CBS, for which he won three
Emmy awards. Since the mid-80's Panter has been developing his artwork in New
York. His first solo show at Pierogi in 1995 featured his drawings, paintings, and
sketchbooks, including his collaborations with comic artists Charles Burns, Jay Cotton,
and Ric Heitzman.
In this exhibition Panter will present a Light Show, he calls "Fog Window" or "Mind
Probe." The Light Show uses common objects to produce light and shadow
abstraction on a small backlit screen, accompanied by a cacophany of radio
samplings.
The project is an out growth of light shows I did in my garage in the
sixties, shadow puppets, experiments done with the performance group
Ape Week in Texas in the seventies and, more recently, experiments with
friends from funnygarbage.com .
These experiments are related to painting ideas and to the dream machines of Byron
Gysin. The effect is relaxing, trippy, dreamy, and a little noisy. There will be daily 45
minute performances during gallery hours-call for times.
