The Martha Graham Drawings. La mostra e' costituita da un gruppo di 13 grandi disegni realizzati da Warhol tra il 1981 ed il 1986. Si tratta del corpo pressoche' completo di lavori su carta ispirati alla famosissima coreografa e danzatrice americana Martha Graham, una delle piu' grandi ballerine del ventesimo secolo, tutt'ora considerata la madre della danza moderna.

La galleria Paolo Curti / Annamaria Gambuzzi & Co. è lieta di annunciare la mostra “The Martha Graham Drawings” del grande artista americano Andy Warhol (Pittsburgh,1928 – New York, 1987), che si aprirà il 30 ottobre prossimo in Via Pontaccio 19, Milano.
La mostra è costituita da un gruppo di 13 grandi disegni realizzati da Warhol tra il 1981 ed il 1986. Si tratta del corpo pressoché completo di lavori su carta che Warhol ha eseguito - alcuni con graffite, altri con acrilico - ispirati alla famosissima coreografa/danzatrice americana Martha Graham.
Martha Graham (Pittsburgh, 1894 – New York, 1991), una delle più grandi ballerine del ventesimo secolo, è tutt’ora considerata la "madre" della danza moderna. Sostenitrice del "movimento" come massima forma di espressione, con le forme angolari che riusciva ad assumere, sapeva comunicare le più profonde emozioni dell'animo umano.
Andy Warhol rimase colpito da Martha Graham fin dal primo momento in cui la conobbe nel 1979. Erano entrambi originari di Pittsburg, lui le raccontò che aveva visto un suo balletto a Pittsburg nel 1948. Quando nel 1986 gli fu richiesto dal Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance un progetto di commemorazione del 60esimo anniversario della nascita della scuola, Warhol non esitò ad acconsentire e dalle foto di alcuni dei più famosi passi di Martha Graham, quali: Satyric Festival Song, Lamentation, e Letter to the World (The Kick). creò i 13 disegni - oggi in mostra nella galleria milanese – che raffigurano le pose di danza, fondendo in modo estremamente poetico, armonioso ed elegante la forma espressiva di Warhol con quella della coreografa/danzatrice.
L’interesse di Warhol per il balletto ha radici lontane, addirittura ai tempi in cui, giovane studente a Pittsburg, frequentava il Carnegie Tech. Negli anni ‘50, a New York, questa passione per la danza lo porta a ritrarre ballerini e ballerine, di danza sia classica che moderna. Warhol possedeva anche una discreta capacità critica sulla qualità tecnica dei ballerini, in una nota del suo diario datata martedì 24 Aprile 1980, infatti, scrive: “…Nureyev è stato terribile, non ha idea di come essere un ballerino moderno.“
La mostra e’ accompagnata da un prezioso catalogo con un appassionante testo/testimonianza di Vincent Fremont, compagno ed amico storico di Andy Warhol.

Galleria Paolo Curti/Annamaria Gambuzzi & Co. is proud to announce the exhibition “The Martha Graham Drawings” by the great American artist Andy Warhol (Pittsburgh,1928 – New York, 1987), which will open on 30th October at Via Pontaccio 19, Milan.
The show is composed of a group of 13 large drawings made by Warhol from 1981 to 1986. This is almost the complete set of the works on paper made by Warhol – some with graphite, others with acrylics - inspired by the very famous American choreographer/dancer Martha Graham.
Martha Graham (Pittsburgh, 1894 – New York, 1991), one of the greatest dancers of the 20th century, is still considered the "mother" of modern dance. An advocate of "movement" as the maximum form of expression, the angular forms of her approach to dance communicate the deepest emotions of the human soul.
Andy Warhol was impressed by Martha Graham right from their first encounter, in 1979. They were both natives of Pittsburg, and he told her that he had seen one of her pieces in Pittsburgh in 1948. When he was asked, in 1986, by the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance to do a commemorative project for the school’s 60th anniversary, Warhol immediately agreed. He created 13 drawings – those in the show in Milan – based on photographs of some of Martha Graham’s most famous steps, including Satyric Festival Song, Lamentation and Letter to the World (The Kick). The images capture moments of movement, combining in a very poetic, harmonious and elegant way the expressive form of Warhol with that of the choreographer/dancer.
Warhol’s interest in ballet was deeply rooted, dating back to his days as a young student in Pittsburgh, at Carnegie Tech. In the 1950s, in New York, this passion for the dance led him to make portraits of both modern and classical dancers. Warhol was also capable of understanding the technical quality of dancers, as demonstrated by a note in his diary, dated Tuesday 24th April, 1980, where he writes: “…Nureyev was terrible, he has no idea how to be a modern dancer.“
The exhibition is accompanied by a precious catalogue with an absorbing text/memoir by Vincent Fremont, a longtime friend and associate of Andy Warhol.
