13,75 - 110 Hz
Sound is movement, energy that our human eye can't see. However, when this energy strikes a flexible surface it becomes visible in waves.
FRIEDRICH GOBBESSO makes this energy transfer visible. For this process, sound designer STEPHAN KURKOWSKI developed different sound patterns in the frequencies from 110 Hz to 55 Hz, 27,5 Hz, down to the very deep frequency of 13,75 Hz with which the water gets treated in experimental test arrangements.
When photo paper is placed in the water while it vibrates at a certain frequency and, at the same time, this paper is exposed to flash light through the water, specific structures created by the sound are captured on the light sensitive material. The water itself functions as a complex curved lens that is in permanent change. The light beams broken by the water form similar, net-like, but differently sized structures on the paper depending on the frequency.
FRIEDRICH GOBBESSO uses water as a multifunctional medium: it transforms sound waves into water waves and becomes a lens; an eye that makes this process visible. The origin is sound but the water transforms this energy into visible waves and in its function as a lens, it also freezes these waves as a unique snapshot on the photo paper.
