comunicato stampa

We are in this techno-scientific world like Gulliver: sometimes too big, sometimes too small, never at the right scale.
-Jean-Francois Lyotard from Postmodernism (ICA Documents) ed. Lisa Appignanesi (London: Free Association Books, 1989)

Frederieke Taylor Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition, entitled Edge Conditions, of new works by Mary Lum. The exhibition will feature paintings, drawings, and collages, and include a large wall drawing that wraps around the gallery walls. The work is an ongoing examination of urban space in its transitional states and explores the way one experiences this space in contemporary life.

Mary Lum combines fragments of comic books and photographs with paintings to create visual abstractions of spatial memories and remnants. Layering multiple perspectives, the artist creates fictional spaces which allow the influence of memory, experience, and expectation to enter the process of interpretation.

As the artist states:
"I am fascinated with the continual destruction and construction of the urban space; the way one thing takes the place of another and the same event happens in many locations. When walking or driving in the city it is sometimes possible to detect the poetic subconscious of the place, the thing we cannot see but can only occasionally access through feeling. The sharp attention required for this experience comes from extensive looking (for nothing in particular), walking without distraction but implicitly always distracted."

Edge Conditions is Mary Lum's first exhibition with the gallery. She has shown previously at Bernard Toale Gallery in Boston, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, in Ridgefield, CT; Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in Buffalo, NY and Galerie Susan Nielsen in Paris, among others. Mary Lum has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants including the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study/Harvard University Fellowship 2004-5, NYFA grants, MacDowell Colony Fellowships and the ISCP studio program in New York. She is currently a Professor of Painting and Drawing at Bennington College, VT and is a member of the Board of Directors of Printed Matter, NY. Among her publications are The Final Results of Psychoanalytic Treatment, How to Make Kimchee, and Occupational Information.
