Extra-European art of the highest quality and global significance meets masterpieces of classical modernism in a unique juxtaposition. In twelve rooms and the foyer of the Fondation Beyeler, groups of works from African and Oceanian cultures enter a dialogue with selected paintings and sculptures by artists such as Monet, van Gogh, Picasso, Klee, Matisse, Mondrian, MirĂ³, Brancusi and Rothko.
The focus is on the human figure. One hundred and eighty outstanding loans from over fifty private and public collections enrich ethnological art from our own holdings, chosen by Ernst Beyeler for his museum. The exhibition aims to underscore the visual force of these works, and reflect the inimitable contribution made by Africa and Oceania to the history of world art.
