Contemporary Art from Portugal
"Expect the World" is an exhibition, video programme and conference of Portuguese artists taking place in Gallery Sparwasser Hq, Z-bar, Parkhaus Treptow and
Künstlerhaus Bethanien (please see addresses and dates below).
The show presents a generation of Portuguese artists who grew up after the 1974 revolution in
Portugal, in the 80's: a period when the Social Utopia was destabilized, when internationalization manifested itself through pop culture and television.
Hence the title
"Expect the world - moi non plus" is implying an ambivalent experience of societal "change" as well as an existential stance. It seems that the reaction to be traced in
these contemporary works is an intense tension, aesthetically expressed.
The participating artists live and work in Lisbon, Berlin and New York:
Rui Toscano, Rui Valério, Carlos Roque, "Tone Scienstists" , Eva Mota, Nuno Cera, Catarina Simões, Ines Pais, Filipa Cesar, Alexandre Estrela and Ana Pinto.
In "Expect the world" an unsettling feeling of loss and melancholia is present in the work of the Tone Scientists who display the scenario of a band (displayed on
video) build up as an energy outlet.
In the video by Eva Mota (EVA). Mota uses her body as material in a set up with strong references to renaissance painting.
"Expects the World" also has escapist elements as Nuno Ceras long exposure photography of the night sky turned into a dreamy image of eternity or Alexandre
Estrelas video projection "THE NAILS FEEDBACK" (nails) multiplying the image of nails in the wall till they, as visual phenomenon, appear as smoke.
Ana Pinto
presents a video piece of visuals slips from one indoor or urban space to another, never letting the viewer settle in an environment.
Filippa César investigates and
creates situational realities in which a random group of people meet and react to on one another in the urban space in her video works.
Concepts of loss in relation to
authentic experience and access to the core of meaning production are present in these video works what also counts for the installation by Catarina Simões, in
which she places a mirror ball in the center of an action film projection. The main action is dispersed in thousands of little images cast on the wall in the cinematic
environment.
Coming down to more profane activities The IP Foundation (by Ines Pais) in an independent way undertakes lifestyle activities as shopping, cooking
and the production of fanzines as well as electronic music (IPzines).
