Juul Kraijer

Cobra Museum, Amstelveen

Recent Work by the winner of the Therese van Duyl-Schwartze portrait prize 2009. The exhibition includes approximately thirty drawings, three bronze statues, four photographs and three videos. The earliest work selected for exhibition dates from 2000, while the most recent works on display for the first time were created in 2008. Kraijer's highly-sensitive and penetrating drawings are executed on paper with searching yet confident line drawing, in charcoal or soft pastel; the frailest of the drawing media.

comunicato stampa

Winner of the Thérèse van Duyl-Schwartze portrait prize 2009

From January 31st, 2009, the Cobra Museum of Modern Art will exhibit a special selection of works by the well-known Dutch visual artist Juul Kraijer. In Print Cabinet, drawings, sculptures, as well as a number of photographs and video works will be on show, including many which will be on view in the Netherlands for the first time. The exhibition provides a good overview of the impressive body of work that has won Juul Kraijer major national and international attention.

The exhibition includes approximately thirty drawings, three bronze statues, four photographs and three videos. The earliest work selected for exhibition dates from 2000, while the most recent works on display for the first time were created in 2008. Amongst the works from 2008 to go on exhibit are: the video works Pound (silent, 4:25 minutes [looped], single-channel video) and Areca Catechu L. (silent, 9:03 minutes, single-channel video); a bronze head (untitled); and, five drawings. The exhibited works are courtesy the artist and from museum, corporate and private collections.

Juul Kraijer (Assen, 1970)

Kraijer's highly-sensitive and penetrating drawings are executed on paper with searching yet confident line drawing, in charcoal or soft pastel; the frailest of the drawing media. Here smearing and erasing play an equally important role to drawing. Traces of previous positions of the model's head and limbs remain visible, revealing the way in which the body has complied with the artist. Brevity and restraint are the guiding principles in these drawings. The figuration is always that of a female body representing a universal; her body or just the head rendered in such as way as to elude identification of race and time period. Primarily however, this work embodies mood. The body is rendered in a simple and graceful calligraphy that is convincing despite the unreality of what is depicted. The drawings often suggest the self-evidence of a human body being merged with that of an animal or landscape elements. The sensitivity and detailed expressiveness that characterises these drawings is just as present in Kraijer's sculptures and photographic works.
Awarding of the Thérèse of Duyl-Schwartz Portrait Prize

During the opening of the exhibition on Friday, January 30 Juul Kraijer will receive the Thérèse of the 2009 Duyl Schwartz-portrait prize.
The exhibition will see the publication of a companion monograph entitled "Juul Kraijer" and written by Wilma Sütö and Véronique Baar. This publication will be available in the museum store (2009 edition, 35 euros, ISBN 9789079148028).
