New Paintings: Part II
Following the great success of Dan McDermotts debut one-person show
at Clapham Art Gallery in November of 2001 we are delighted to present
the second part of the programme, New Paintings: Part II.
McDermott graduated from University of Northumbria in Newcastle in 1995
with a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Art Practice. He works from a studio in
the Yorkshire Dales.
McDermott has become known for his photo-realist renditions of scenes
that commonly feature speeding vehicles set before City tenement blocks
or accelerating through vast open deserts. Retro Americana is
enthusiastically championed in the form of its most enduring exports. We
are all familiar with Cadillacs and Dodges cruising by neon-lit
sidewalks or chasing through vacant car lots and it is that spirit which
has been embraced here. Expertly painted in varying scales, McDermott
renders permanent fleeting scenes of transient moments cars or
trucks or helicopters moving from here to there. His work is energetic,
funky and highly individual.
Combined with aerial views of cities and raised roads and set between
day and night this new body of work is a presentation of various
viewpoints of the American town and City according to the edited view of
the artist.
