This MCA-organized exhibition is a retrospective of the work of H.C.Westermann (1922-1981), an artist whose work is unique in twentieth-century art.
Throughout his career, Westermann has been described as a Pop artist, a neo-dada artist, and a figurative sculptor.
The exhibition, complemented by a catalogue raisonné of Westermann's objects, will be a definitive re-examination of Westermann's oeuvre, demonstrating the complexity and seriousness of subject, theme, and allusion in his work, and revealing his original American genius.
This will be the first major museum exhibition devoted to Westermann since 1979.
This exhibition is organized by MCA Curator Lynne Warren along with Assistant Curator Michael Rooks.
Support for the catalogue raisonné has been generously provided by a grant from The Judith Rothschild Foundation.
