Installations, Objects, Videos and Performance
'Of course, our sources of creativity can be found all around the
world. We do not just 'feed' on the events in our island. Our problems
could just as well be yours. We destroy this absolute closure, which
sometimes suffocates us, by provoking an an-swer or confrontation,
and by seeking communication.'
Magda González-Mora
One of the most vibrant, fascinating current art scenes can be found on
the Carib-bean island state of Cuba which, with its Havana Biennale art
festival, functions as a cultural hub between Europe, Africa and the two
Americas. Some of the young Cuban artists have recently become stars
on the international, most especially the North American,
market-despite all the US-American political embargoes.
With the exhibition,'No Place' the ifa Gallery Bonn presents pieces by
five Cuban artists who are working with installations and performances,
as well as-increas-ingly-with video filming and the new digital media.
As co-founder and curator of the Havana Biennale, Magda
Gonzalez-Mora-who has curated the 'No Place' ex-hibition-keeps
closely in touch with and has the most direct knowledge of what is
happening in Cuban art. This has enabled her to develop a fascinating
exhibition in co-operation with the artists themselves.
The exhibition is also designed to counter the many prejudices against
and clichés about insular Cuban life and to show that the subject and
problems the artists deal with are universally valid and topical, beyond
the local rhetoric. Magda Gonzalez sees this validity and topicality
confirmed mainly in the basic questions related to (global)
communication, in identity and manipulation, ethics, culture
and power-subjects that also appear in the artists works.
