Aldo Iacobelli

Galeria Tomas March, Valencia

From time to time one talks to the moon

comunicato stampa

Opening on Thursday April 23rd, Galería Tomás March is hosting an exhibition of recent work by Aldo Iacobelli (Naples, 1950). Curated by Linda Marie Walker the exhibition was originally presented at the Experimental Art Foundation of Adelaide (Australia) from November to December 2007.

Over the last twenty years Aldo Iacobelli, who lives and works between Adelaide and Valencia, has been plumbing the conceptual depths of painting. Since 1996 Iacobelli has been represented in Spain by Galería Tomás March, both at its gallery in Valencia as well as at art fairs like ARCO, Art Basel, etc.

Charged with a heightened aesthetic sensibility From time to time one talks to the moon includes painted, ceramic and architectural elements that taken together seem to tell a story connecting with areas of our memory as it reflects on issues of appearance, marginalisation, and social awareness.

Expanded Painting

Aldo Iacobelli pays attention to the surface of his works as sites where highly complex events take place—their simultaneous personal or political affects—while his insistence on arranging the works taking into account the specific architecture of the gallery space is a way of creating a special expressive situation that intensifies and bestows meaning on the works. The architectural elements that Iacobelli ties in with his canvases and ceramics add a further wealth and dimension to his painting. Here the ornamental is brought into play to first unsettle and then trigger reflection. The painstaking application of paint on canvas creates complicated textures that, when seen under the artificial light of the gallery space, create an effect that brings to mind the reflection of moonlight and makes us wonder about those who speak to the moon in the middle of the night.

Iacobelli’s work has been on view in many one-person and group shows since 1974. In recent years he has had solo exhibitions at Sala de Arte Robayera, 2008, (Miengo, Cantabria), Galería Siboney, 2007, (Santander), Manuel Ojeda, 2007, (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), BMG-ART, 2006, (Adelaide), Carmen de la Calle, 2005, (Madrid) and group shows at Samstag Museum of Art, 2008, (Adelaide), CDAN Centro de Arte y Naturaleza, 2007, (Huesca), the Melbourne Biennial, TarraWarra Museum, 2006 (Melbourne, Australia) and DELUXE, Sala Plaza de España, 2002, (Madrid). His works was recently surveyed in “I Love Painting. Transient Architectures” a monographic by critic John Neylon published by Wakefield Press in 2006. His work is also in many museum and private collections in Spain and worldwide, including the Australian National Gallery, Museo de Bellas Artes de Santander, Diputación de Cádiz, ARTIUM in Vitoria or the Phillips Morris Collection (Australia).
