Ebbe Stub Wittrup e Benjamin Bergmann

Presumed Reality. Partendo da diapositive degli anni '50 che ritraevano una spedizione estiva nelle montagne norvegesi, Wittrup ha reinterpretato quelle immagini creando una realta' diversa. L'idea di una Presumed Reality sottende anche l'opera di Benjamin Bergmann che la spinge ulteriormente nella dimensione dell'assurdo e della confusione.

La galleria Otto Zoo presenta Presumed Reality, una mostra con opere di Benjamin Bergmann e Ebbe Stub Wittrup.
Presumed reality è il titolo del progetto del fotografo danese Ebbe Stub Wittrup (Aarhus, 1973), a cui la mostra si è ispirata. Partendo da una serie di diapositive degli Anni Cinquanta che ritraevano una spedizione estiva nelle montagne norvegesi, Wittrup ha reinterpretato quelle immagini classiche ed eleganti creando una realtà diversa, presunta, rarefatta. I protagonisti della spedizione sono presenze sfuggenti, figure anonime dai tratti del volto indefiniti, collocate in uno scenario imponente e impenetrabile. Le grandi fotografie di Wittrup diventano testimonianze di un rimpianto struggente per un passato proposto nella sua effimera e inarrivabile eleganza, un déjà vu insondabile e irreale; sospeso nel tempo. Lontano, ma presente, l’inquietante boato della montagna, dell’ineludibile corrotto futuro.
L’idea di una Presumed Reality, sottende anche tutta l’opera dell’artista tedesco Benjamin Bergmann (Würzburg, 1968) che la spinge ulteriormente nella dimensione dell’assurdo e della confusione. I lavori di Bergmann si muovono nella “border zone” tra scultura, installazioni e teatro, che ha rivendicato la propria presenza nel mondo dell’arte almeno dai tempi di “Fluxus” e l’artista stesso ha scelto di giocare un ruolo centrale come agitatore. Agitatore e sognatore, Bergmann costruisce enormi macchine inutili, recuperando la meccanica di vecchi utensili in disuso. Affascinato dalla loro forma e dal loro suono, ne amplifica la funzione estraniandola dal contesto. Costruisce abnormi falciatrici, giganteschi altoparlanti e poi archi, ponti, scenografie, strutture aeree: apparati effimeri assurdi, vaghi, che si consumano nell’attimo stesso in cui hanno assolto la loro funzione.
Entrambi affascinati dalla costruzione di una realtà altra, aulica e salvifica partendo da elementi del passato, Wittrup e Bergmann si incontrano sul terreno del loro reciproco attaccamento a un’estetica classica, meccanica, artigianale. Il lavoro dell’uno diventa un mezzo infallibile per decifrare l’opera dell’altro e svelarne gli aspetti più significativi.

Otto Zoo gallery presents Presumed Reality, an exhibition of works from Benjamin Bergmann and Ebbe Stub Wittrup.
Presumed Reality is the title of the project of Danish photographer Ebbe Stub Wittrup (Aarhus, 1973), whose work inspired this exhibition. Starting from one series of slides from the Fifties that portrayed one summer expedition in the Norwegian mountains, Wittrup has reinterpreted those classic and elegant images creating a different reality that is presumed and subtle. The protagonists of the expedition are an elusive presence, anonymous figures whose facial features are indefinite and blurred, placed in an imposing and impenetrable scenario. Witrupp’s large photographs become a testimony of the all-consuming desire for a past of ephemeral and unreachable elegance, an unfathomable and unreal déjà vu that is suspended in time. Distant, yet present, the worrysome boom of the mountains, the inescapable corrupt future.
The idea of a Presumed Reality is also at the root of the work of German artist Benjamin Bergmann (Würzburg, 1968) that further pushed the dimensions of absurdity and confusion. His work treads the line between sculpture, installation and theater; having claimed a presence in the world of art at least from the time of “Fluxus” the artist has always chosen to stake a central role as agitator. Agitator and dreamer, Bergmann constructs enormous machines of no use, salvaging old mechanics' tools no longer in use. He is fascinated with their shape and sound, as well as with their function outside of their original context. He constructs abnormal lawn mowers, giant loudspeakers, oversized arches, bridges, illogical sceneries, ephemeral apparatuses. At the same moment of consumption, his pieces are simultaneously absolved of their function.
Both artists are fascinated with the construction of another reality that is both noble and redeeming. Starting with elements of the past, Wittrup and Bergmann encounter one another on the same playing field using a classic handmade aesthetic. The work of one has become an infallible way to decipher the work of the other, in turn revealing the deeper, more significant aspects.
