Paolo Buffa, Luisa and Ico Parisi, Gio Ponti, Carlo Enrico Rava –
Italian Design from the 30s to 50s
Featuring celebrated names like Gio Ponti or Luisa and Ico Parisi, the exhibition also introduces furniture by Carlo Enrico Rava and Paolo Buffa. Paolo Buffas early pieces are influenced by the Lombardian Neo-Classicism. In the 1930s he starts more and more to work with exotic forms. Carlo Enrico Rava received international attention for his architectural plans, clearly affected by the International Style and the rational movement. Nevertheless he enjoyed working as a film set decorator for the Cinecittà studios and designing fanciful and elegant furniture.
Paolo Buffa's (1903-1970) furniture is characterized by a design full of creativity and high-quality craftsmanship. He succeeds in arranging traditional forms and modern influences. Geometrical motifs are combined with sophisticated details and precious materials. Simultaneously the modern movement is reflected in his work. His works already partly anticipates typical forms of the 50s.
Carlo Enrico Rava (1903-1985) is still a relatively unknown architect of the Italian Modernism. Rava's furniture shows a creative approach to the past, which seems to contradict his rationalistic architecture. He combines cubic forms and delicate details, which to some extent quote the Baroque or Classicism. Rava also uses exotic and Asian influences.
Luisa (1914-1990) and Ico Parisi (1916-1996)
The work of the two architects derives from an Antique tradition. They use mainly rosewood or mahogany, later on also shiny surfaces combined with stainless steel. Ico described himself a kind of Renaissance artist, common to all sorts of artistic professions.
Gio Ponti (1891-1979) is probably one of the best known and most important architect and designer of the 20th century. Many of his objects have become icons of modern design. Ponti's work spreads from the Milanese Neo-classicism to the ground-breaking Italian design of the second half of the 20th century. His moderate rationalism is mixed up with fine and often picturesque details. Pontis' objects often appear to be reduced in their form but nevertheless animated by an organic inspiration.
