Contemporary Art and Pop Music
Liverpool is known the world over for its pop music heritage. Historically, because it was the first
point of entry for American soul and pop records, it became a centre for the appreciation of pop
music with a strong dance culture reaching back to the 1950s and earlier. The continuing popularity
of dance and club culture in the city sets the scene for this exhibition that explores the cultural
collisions between art and music.
The connections between visual art, pop music and videos are abundant. The influence of music on
the work of visual artists has been extensive, often providing inspiration for creating new forms of
visual culture through experiments that blur the boundaries of both art forms. Many of the groups and
musicians in this exhibition have themselves been visual artists and have a direct involvement with
the visual culture connected to marketing and performing music (album covers,
videos, performance projections, etc.).
