D'Amelio Terras is pleased to present Fantasyland, a group exhibition
featuring works on paper and collages by eight artists who create complex
and cohesive fictional worlds. Laylah Ali, John Bankston, Kojo Griffin and
Yun-Fei Ji use the visual language of cartoons and comic strips to examine
social, racial and sexual relationships. Susan Arena, Marcel Dzama and
Konstantin Kakanias create modern fairytales full of surreal sexuality and
barely-repressed violence. Jon Pylypchuk populates his landscapes with
figures that are simultaneously pathetic and menacing.
All use a consistent cast of characters and an ambiguous narrative structure
to lure viewers further into their dark world. Attempting to understand the
narrative, viewers become involved and potentially implicated in the
activities of the characters they follow. Each artist uses fantasy as a
strategy to illuminate strange and often unpleasant truths.
