The museum has invited Raymond Depardon, Jim Dine, Robert Frank, Roni Horn, Karl Lagerfeld, Ed Ruscha, Jurgen Teller, Deborah Turbeville, Jeff Wall, and numerous other confirmed photographers, to present the steps involved in creating books of photography of the House of Steidl. Photomechanical processes towards mass diffusion: the collection of the museum.

The Fine Art & Craflt of the Steidl Book
Gerhard Steidl, described by the daily newspaper Le Monde as "the haute couture editor", is undoubtedly the most prolific printer and editor in the world of photography: a new publication leaves the presses almost every day in Göttingen, alias "Steidlville", his birthplace in Germany. His fiefdom - at one and the same time editing house, printing factory, graphic design and reproduction specialists' studio - also has the reputation of accommodating the most prestigious artists of our era.
The Musée de l'Elysée has invited Raymond Depardon, Jim Dine, Robert Frank, Roni Horn, Karl Lagerfeld, Ed Ruscha, Jürgen Teller, Deborah Turbeville and Jeff Wall, among numerous other confirmed photographers, to show us behind the scenes in the "House of Steidl" and present the steps involved in creating books of photography. This exhibit invites you to discover and leaf through today's most beautiful books of photography.

Photomechanical processes: towards mass diffusion
As of 1823, Niépce had perfected an inking process named "heliography", which has the advantage of not needing light in the last stage of development. When editors began to include photographs in their publications, new techniques of reproduction on metal were born and multiplied under the name of "photogravure".
At the end of the 19th century, the mechanization of modern printing techniques helped to increase the use printing proofs obtained by combining photography and engraving. Photomechanical techniques other than heliogravure and the oldfashioned daguerreotype were soon created. Today we can count at least fifteen different techniques, including offset, photolitho graphy, photocollography and serigraphy.
