Painting Machine
June 12-June 29, 2002

Barry Freedland will exhibit Painting Machine for his first solo exhibition at Mobius. The idea of potentiality, the condition of existing as a possibility, pervades the work which juxtaposes aspects of mass production and spontaneous gesture. The work is presented with ingenious invention, detailed virtuosity, and wit.

Painting Machine is a motorized, mechanical like structure that explores the relationship between artist and audience in creating art.

The artist's earlier works, many invented mechanical devices, also make reference to popular culture and art culture - and allude to the processes of self-reflection and how others perceive us.
These include:

"Bump and Go Eye," 2000, is a four in half foot tall roving eye that randomly observes its environment.
"Aye", 2000, is a moving wall of thirty-five vacu-formed reproductions of the artist's face nodding in affirmation.
"Remote Control Artist," 1999, a 16 ft. long mechanical arm that flies the artist in circles under the control of the viewer.
"Bubblegum Grinder," 1998, a mechanical mouth that chews Dubble Bubble Bubble gum.
"A.B.C. Gum Tux," 1998, formal wear enveloped by Already Been Chewed bubble gum.
"Slow-Racer", 1997, a vehicle based on a Salt Flat race car that travels at the speed of an inch per minute.
"Artist surrounded by nothing," 1994, the artist sits within a clear plastic chamber placed within another chamber.

Barry Freedland is represented by Sundaram Tagore Gallery, New York.

There will be a reception for the artist and gallery talk on Friday, June 14, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Gallery hours are Wednesday - Saturday, 12:00 - 5:00 PM.
