This exhibition-or more appropriately, intervention-presents Mollura's work in the context of layers of understanding seduction, play, memory, and decay that encourage viewers to reach beyond their initial attraction and delve deeper into the rich myriad of associations and references suggested by his compelling forms.
The inflated sculpture of Argentine-born, Los
Angeles-based artist, Carlos Mollura will be found in multiple
locations in the Museum. Look for them on the exterior
terraces of the building, in the Forum and in the windows
from June 15 - August 18, 2002. This exhibition-or more
appropriately, intervention-presents Mollura’s work in the
context of layers of understanding seduction, play,
memory, and decay that encourage viewers to reach
beyond their initial attraction and delve deeper into the rich
myriad of associations and references suggested by his
compelling forms. It is the connection to these broader
universal experiences that makes Mollura’s work
simultaneously accessible and challenging.
Mollura’s sculpture reveals itself in layers much like a new
toy that is packaged underneath cardboard and shrink
wrap. The initial attraction to his work may come as a
result of the shiny plastic newness, but over time, the
viewer fills the simple material object with associations and
memories.

Duggan, BAM Curator. Carlos Mollura is represented by the
James Harris Gallery in Seattle.
