The Kravets/Wehby Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings
by Melissa Brown opening on Saturday, June 15 with a reception for the
artist from 6 to 8pm and running through July 13, 2002.
Melissa Brown's new paintings are oil on aluminum in which the paint is
rolled and stenciled onto the surface while the tiny details are hand
painted after the scene is set. The flat surfaces she strives for are a
product of her interest in printmaking as well as computer generated
imagery. All of the paintings in the show are invented fantasy landscapes
while she is extremely aware of defining her subject in a contemporary
manner. In 'Lucky Landscape' the overall idea is based on a ridiculously
positive sense of good luck. 'Calvary Cemetery at Night' is inspired by an
actual place. The 'Lovescape' is romantically suggestive. In 'Chic-a-dee'
the portrait of the animal is intentionally blocking the action that is
taking place behind it. In all of her work her wide-eyed view of the world
is both sincere and ironic.
Melissa Brown recently received her MFA from Yale University and is now
living and working in New York. In 2001 her work was included in a group
show at Art In General in New York. In a recent issue of Art on Paper a
review about her prints appeared. This will be her first solo show in New
York.
