A Decade of Transition 1983 - 1993
Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art (PSCA) announces the opening of Arturo Cuenca: A Decade of Transition 1983 - 1993, featuring the work of Cuban born Arturo Cuenca.
The exhibition explores a transitional period in Cuenca's work, wherein he left Cuba in 1989 for Mexico and eventually made his way to New York City in 1991. Cuenca, who was hard at work on a "conceptualist study of ideology and science" in Cuba, found himself in a new art world with abundant materials and tools - including computers and an array of photographic equipment - in which to further develop his beliefs. Throughout his career Cuenca has been a pioneer and he refers to his work as painting, although it has many origins in photography and often incorporates that medium. The result leads the viewer into Cuenca's conceptual world" always questioning, always thinking. His work continues to question reality and representation and causes one to consider one's own perception of the physical, psychological, and philosophical.
Sometimes compared to David Salle and Sigmar Polke, Cuenca focuses on composition. Mixing up elements, creating transparencies, and forcing the viewer to explore his canvases for both the subject and the conceptual object that inspired each. He does so, especially through photomontages that combine layers of often-disorienting images. With a decade of hindsight, what is revealed in this exhibit is the fundamental nature of this avant-garde artist's work" still fresh, still questioning, still strong.

PAUL SHARPE CONTEMPORARY ART
PSCA is founded on the premise that the artist comes first and is the raison d'être of the art world.
The role of the gallerist is to nurture creative accomplishment and to cultivate the collectors and curators who can sustain the artists.
The artists represented are those whose work one would wish to collect and to enjoy, while helping to support their careers. PSCA is led by Paul Sharpe, formerly of the Whitney Museum of American Art. The space itself is meant to encourage a dialogue in issues in art today and as such is designed as a salon rather than a white box. The color scheme is blue, camel, and white and it is inspired by a Justin Knowles painting of the mid 1960s. The concept is to create a space where artist and art lovers can congregate and appreciate fine contemporary art.
