Ante Timmermans and Masashi Echigo

Museum Het Domein, Sittard

Fifth pair of artists. The work of a current 'candidate laureate' is combined with that of an artist who has since gone on to develop his or her artistic practice. The drawings of Timmermans are a critical, but also poetic reflection or reaction to his environment. He is particularly fascinated by the routine, the (hidden) systems, the banality and the absurdity of society. The works of Echigo are placed in a close relationship to sites or to the environmental around them.

GuestRoom #10

The Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) is one of Belgium's most distinguished institutes for the arts. It is an international platform for young international artists whose development is closely followed by curators, critics and gallerists with a keen interest in emerging talent. The HISK Guestroom will focus on a different pair of artists every two weeks. Domein curator Roel Arkesteijn selected six pairs of artists who studied at the HISK.

16 March – 28 March 2010
Ante Timmermans (Belgium, 1976)

"My work involves reflection"

The drawings of Ante Timmermans are a critical, but also poetic reflection or reaction to his environment. He is particularly fascinated by the routine, the (hidden) systems, the banality and the absurdity of society. His stay in Berlin and his move to Switzerland have clearly influenced his work. Besides small drawings that began as notes in a sketchbook, he draws monumental landscapes. Each of them witnesses a strange mindfulness, but also humor. But they are mainly the result of his thinking - ideas drawn. (Edith Doove)

Ante Timmermans' drawings canbe regarded as mind maps. Recently the artist works more according to the idea of the mind map. In his work he uses more often the characteristic way of mind-map drawing - for example in its drawing large format "14/2009 (2009-09-25), 2009. This work has an exemplary character, because it mentions some of the fields that theme to heart Ante Timmermans, system and construction, two concepts were both form and content levels are essential. (Mirjam Vara Dinis)

Masachi Echigo (Japan, 1982)

"My works are placed in a close relationship to sites or to the environmental around them. I pay a great deal of attention to the context of the site and inspect the area and collects extensive information about it before starting to work.
On the other hand, I am not concerned with the history or peculiarities of the site and do not bring social relationships into my work. I am only concerned with a process of endless "detachment" with the outside world by a repetitive act of "commitment"; something being used as a part of the site to make something which is subtly different from what was originally intended. The work produced by this process can be experienced in many ways. The viewer can walk around and inside the work to get a physical sense of the space surrounding them. It is possible for one's entire body to experience a feeling of enclosure and oppression caused by both physical and psychological obstacles with the entire body".

A cycle of lectures will be held to accompany the exhibition. Visit the website for further details.
