Award-winning photographer William Yang explores issues of grief, family and identity in this adaptation of his acclaimed stage performance Sadness. Directed by Tony Ayres (Walking on Water, 2002) this mesmerising landmark documentary shifts between storytelling, photography and stylised re-enactment.

Painting with Light in a Dark World

This startling documentary focuses on Peter Darren Moyle, a self-trained photographer who has been illuminating the darkest shadows of Sydney's underbelly for ten years, equipped with his old 1936 medium-format camera.

The films are part of the SBSi: the independent eye -a tribute to the bold and innovative dramas, documentaries and animations commissioned by SBS Independent. SBS Independent's risk-taking productions and stimulating stories have collectively won more than 350 national and international awards. Featuring a selection of inspired Australian filmmaking and an exciting premiere, the festival brings you face-to-face with some of our finest filmmakers and most vibrant characters.

Taking its name from Paul Kelly s song (Archie s haunting rendition is performed in the film), Des Kootji Raymond s emotive documentary forms a rock-solid message to all Australians. Steve The Sandman Abbott journeys across Siberia with his mother Evelyn, following rumours of an oil strike on the old family property! The perennial loser (Triple J, Triple M and Good News Week) will be your travel guide through this work-in-progress screening.
