BURYZONE invites you to the presentation of media theorist and free lance curator Joanne Richardson who will introduce webzine Subsol and her critical theory of avant-gardes.
Subsol is a collaborative webzine venture stemming out of dissatisfaction with art as a series of mediations by institutions, curators, and theoretical frameworks often foreign to actual practices. As a matter of principle, all contributions are from artists and those involved at the point of production-and not from art critics. In a world of increasing inter-mediation, it is important to become the curators of our own experience and the distributors of our own desires. During the course of one year, there will be three thematic issues: Art Beneath the Edge of Politics; Sovereign Media, Autonomous Spaces; and Time, Space, Money. The presentation will discuss the creation of the website, and present contributions from the first thematic issue, including RTMark, EDT, 01.ORG, Irwin, Apsolutno, subReal, Miklos Erhardt, and Ivana Kesser.
The internet projection will be framed in the context of theoretical speculations about the withering of the project of the avant-gardes, who always become bureaucratic doubles of the system they wish to negate, and the emergence of a new form of group collaboration, especially in Eastern Europe. This structure is no longer properly called a group - because the characteristic of the group is contraction toward unity - but an extension outward in which the aim of the collaborative venture is not self-promotion, but the creation of an environment for meetings and chance networks. Subsol itself reflects this new structure, the creators remaining nameless or adopting pseudonyms, and announcing from the beginning their eventual disintegration within the course of a year.
Joanne Richardson was born in 1968 in Bucharest. Educated in US in philosophy and cultural studies. Currently she is working with self-organized artists' spaces and centers in Eastern Europe, especially in Romania. She has curated programs of experimental film and video, as well as net art, in US, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, Poland, Latvia, Russia. Has lectured and published extensively, on topics including social movements from the 1960-80s, recent French Philosophy, contemporary art in East Europe, and experimental film.
