Nominations invited for the 2001 Turner Prize. Sponsored by Channel 4, the seventeenth Turner Prize will be awarded at rate Britain on 4 December 2001 to a British artist under 50 for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding 24 May 2001.

Sponsored by Channel 4, the seventeenth Turner Prize will be awarded at rate Britain on 4 December 2001 to a British artist under 50 for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding 24 May 2001. The Turner Prize was established in 1984 by
the Patrons of New Art, and is intended to promote public
discussion of new developments in contemporary British art.
It is now widely recognised as one of the most important
and prestigious awards for the visual arts. The £20,000
prize is awarded annually by a jury selected by the Patrons
of New Art.
The members of the 2001 Turner Prize Jury are:

Robert Storr, Senior Curator, Painting and Sculpture, The
Museum of Modern Art,New York
Jonathan Watkins, Director, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham
Nicholas Serota, Djredor of rate and Chairman of the Jury
Nominations for the Prize are invited from the public and
can be made by e-mail through the Tate website at
http://www.tate.org.uk or at http://www.channeI4.com/plus/turner by
24 May 2001. Nomination forms are also available from the
four rate sites and should be sent to the Director of rate
Britain, Millbank, London SW1P 4RG by the same date. For
the purposes of nomination for the Turner Prize, the term
British applies to all artists working in the United Kingdom
and to British born artists who may be working abroad. The
Jury reserves the right to consider any artist not already
nominated.
A shortlist of names will be agreed by the Jury and
announced on 30 May 2001. Work by the shortlisted artists
will be shown at rate Britain in a special exhibition from 7
November 2001 - 20 January 2002. The Turner Prize will be
awarded on 4 December 2001 and will be presented at an
award ceremony at rate Britain during a live broadcast on
Channel 4, produced by Illuminations.
The work of the shortlisted artists will be the focus for a
wide range of events at both rate Britain and other galleries
around the country during the period of the exhibition.
