The Exhibition A Nordic Space in the Felleshus of the Nordic Embassies establishes a virtual
space consisting of video sequences recorded in the five Nordic capitals.
The images are shown on 20 screens built into a wooden wall traversing the exhibition space.
Upon entering the exhibition the visitor is recorded on videotape in front of a blue screen and -
by means of the blue-box-technique - superimposed onto the images of the rather deserted
cityscapes. While moving along the 50m wooden wall the viewer immediately recognises
himself walking across the Nordic capitals: Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki and
Reykjavik.
This way the architectural concept of the Embassies is echoed in a playful manner, since the
wall in which the monitors are placed corresponds with the façade of the Embassies, which
gathers the five single buildings into a harmonic unit and visualizes the same connection of the
northern European capitals.
The visitor is not merely a viewer but an active participant in the synthetically produced Nordic
space. However, he will at no point be able to intervene with the imagines, but remains on their
surface. It is only an ephemeral visual phenomena, comparable to the relation of tourists to the
places they visit. They also merely stay on the surface of the city, onto which they project
individual as well as common experiences and ideas.
The artists
Stine Berger (born 1972, lives in Copenhagen) and Johan Holten (born 1976, lives in Berlin)
have been collaborating since 1999 producing site-specific installations in urban contexts.
The exhibition A Nordic Space was made possible through the support of the Nordic
Embassies, Nordisk Kulturfond and Politiken-fonden and it is part of the official ART FORUM
BERLIN programme.
A Catalogue published in German and English is available at the Embassies free of charge.
