A special program in addition to Manifesta 4 in Frankfurt and Documenta 11 in Kassel. The idea is to host and to bring together up to 200 art students from all over the world and to provide them with an infrastructure which enables them to experience both art exhibitions and to get in contact with a wide range of international colleagues and artists who are especially invited to host workshops with the students.
The Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Städelschule
(Frankfurt am Main) in collaboration with Studentski Kulturni Centar
(Belgrade), Institute For Contemporary Art (Moscow), Escola de Artes
Visuais, Maumaus (Lisbon) and Protoacademy (Edinburgh) wants to take the
initiative to organize a week with a special program in addition to two
of the most important European contemporary art exhibitions, Manifesta 4
in Frankfurt and Documenta 11 in Kassel. The idea is to host and to
bring together up to 200 art students from all over the world at the
Städelschule and to provide them with an infrastructure which enables
them to experience both art exhibitions and to get in contact with a
wide range of international colleagues and artists who are especially
invited to host workshops with the students.
This project is called GASTHOF and will take place from July 24th - July 31st 2002.
GASTHOF will function as a kind of home base: A forum for a theoretical
reflection as well as for recreation and communication. Participants are
going to live at the Städelschule for one week and are asked to join
workshops on the nature of GASTHOF. They are invited to investigate and
reflect the issues of hospitality, cooking and music in their relation
and relevance to visual arts. Facing current political tendencies in
various European countries, the international dialogue is a necessity,
and hospitality as an approach and a method within the arts needs to be
discussed.
The participants are integrated directly in all activities. They are
asked to present themselves with their practices on cooking, food
production and consumption, recycling, sound, music, speech, acoustic
art, radio, noise etc. to create discussions about their production and
research.
GASTHOF is not a new invention at the Städelschule. For a long time
the cooking class of the Städelschule together with the former
professor Peter Kubelka organised a special cooking event called
"Gasthaus" in the centre hall of the art academy at the end of each
summer semester. The GASTHOF will be an extension of this earlier idea.
The two completely equipped kitchens and the tradition of cooking as a
fully established art-discipline at the Städelschule are perfect
conditions to evoke an extraordinary possibility of mutual exchange of
professional and amateur experiences.
A stage, placed in a circus tent nearby the Städelschule at the Main
river, will be offered as the second research laboratory for the student
activities and a discussion platform with artists, scientists, DJs,
theoreticians and musicians such as John Armleder, Joseph Backstein,
Thomas Bayrle, Ben van Berkel, Daniel Birnbaum, Jürgen Bock,
Clementine Deliss, Dobrila Denegri, Ayse Erkmen, Charles Esche, Robert
Fleck, Isabelle Graw, Carsten Höller, Ronald Jones, Hans Ulrich
Obrist, Philippe Parreno, Tobias Rehberger, Superflex, Rirkrit
Tiravanija, Biljana Tomic as well as the curators of Manifesta 4 and
Documenta 11.
The whole project and its results will merge in a publication on the
Internet called MENUE, a collection of about 200 cooking recipes of the
participants from different regions of the world, a critical synopsis of
the questions that were discussed during GASTHOF about the conditions of
food production today and documents of the investigations on cooking and
music in their relevance to visual arts and the relation to cultural
diversity and international understanding.
Living and working together at GASTHOF offers an extraordinary chance to
all participants for mutual exchange and communication on art. We
believe that GASTHOF is a necessary extension of the conventional models
of art academies today.
