Artist's Books. In six exhibition galleries Picasso's graphic works are to be shown in the context of the books in which they were published. Between 1905 and 1973 he designed more than 150 books, the most important of which are to be displayed in this exceptional exhibition. With more than 100 works, the Brandhorst Collection is one of the most comprehensive in this field. Some 85 artist's books by Picasso will be on display.
Following its successful opening year, the Museum Brandhorst
is now staging its first exhibition, “Picasso: Artist’s Books”, thereby making
another section of the Brandhorst Collection accessible to the public with an
exemplary selection of works.
Picasso was one of the most prolific artists of the 20th century and this is true
also for the genre of the artist’s book. Between 1905 and 1973 he designed more than
150 books, the most important of which are to be displayed in this exceptional
exhibition. With more than 100 works, the Brandhorst Collection is one of the most
comprehensive in this field. Some 85 artist’s books by Picasso will be on display.
Picasso’s love of experimenting with different printing techniques and artistic
means of expression, as well as his close cooperation with authors and publishers,
form focal points.
Picasso explored all conceivable facets of artists’ books. His graphic works can be
found in books by Max Jacob, Paul Eluard, Tristan Tzara, Pierre Reverdy and many
others. Picasso worked together with leading publishers and dealers (including
Ambroise Vollard, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, Iliazd, Pierre-André Benoit, Crommelynck)
and of course with the very best printers of the day (such as Mourlot, Lacourière,
Frélaut). These specially designed publications generally had print runs of between
20 and 200 signed and numbered copies.
In six exhibition galleries Picasso’s graphic works are to be shown in the context
of the books in which they were published. In addition to the incomparable spectrum
of styles and printing techniques which Picasso mastered superbly, visitors will be
able to see a display of avant-garde typography as well as exquisite paper and
covers.
The exhibition has been designed together with the museum’s architects, Sauerbruch
Hutton. In addition the use of electronic media encourages visitors to learn about
the immense variety and beauty of the artist’s books by Picasso which make up an
important part of ‘the continent Picasso’.
The exhibition catalogue, edited by Armin Zweite and Nina Schleif, with informative
texts and some 200 specially commissioned, high-quality photographs provides an
in-depth insight into the subject of artist’s books by Picasso. It is published by
Hirmer Verlag.
The exhibition “Picasso: Artist’s Books” will be shown at the Kupferstich-Kabinett
Dresden from April 2011 onwards.
The Museum Brandhorst is staging an extensive programme of related events to
accompany the exhibition, devised in cooperation with the Typographische
Gesellschaft München (tgm).
