Guest: île flottante ! Nica Giuliani & Andrea Gsell
At least since garnering considerable attention with their 2009/10 work "Fisches Nachgesang", île flottante have been among the established Swiss artist duos.

The works of île flottante are typical of a generation of artists who consistently incorporate the viewer into their work. Their work, which they created especially for the "Auswahl 11" exhibition, revolves around a message that is condensed by means of media-specific editing processes. Impressions and statements are conveyed in a subtle and often ironic manner.

The play with perception and the specificity of the exhibition site are central aspects of this particular work. The interaction between various messages and the connection to topical subjects create the distinctive atmosphere defining the art of île flottante.

île flottante | Nica Giuliani & Andrea Gsell
Andrea Gsell - b. in Brugg/Aargau in 1974, lives and works in Brugg and Basel, and Nica Giuliani, b. in Landau, Germany in 1980, lives and works in Basel - met while studying media art and have been working together under the name "île flottante" since 2003. Their works are frequently site-specific and located in public spaces, while at the same time actively involving viewers, as, for instance, in "expansion sonore", 2007, City of Basel and 2008, Duisburg city center, "sideseeing", 2008, bblackboxx Basel, in cooperation with Barbara Meier, "Fisches Nachgesang", 2009, videotank Zurich and 2010, Vögele Kulturzentrum Pfäffikon and "floconnes", 2010, Fondation Beyeler Riehen, in cooperation with Lilian Beidler.

A project of the Aargauer Kunsthaus and the Aargauer Kuratorium

At the end of the year, the Aargauer Kunsthaus and the Aargau Kuratorium present the "Auswahl 11". This traditional annual exhibition of Aargau artists offers a survey of the wide range of current art practices in the Canton of Aargau. This year, a total of 69 art practitioners were invited to show their works. As this year's guest artists, île flottante ! Nica Giuliani & Andrea Gsell created a new and surprising site-specific work.

The annual exhibition provides an opportunity for local artists to present their work to the public. Any artist living in or coming from the Canton of Aargau can apply to be included in the exhibition and for work grants from the Aargau Kuratorium. In October, two juries of experts, one from the Aargauer Kunsthaus and the other from the Aargau Kuratorium, have independently evalutated the submitted works. This year, a total of 221 artists submitted their files. Out of these, 69 art practitioners were invited by the juries to present their works in the annual "Auswahl 11" exhibition.

At the exhibition opening on 2 December 2011 at 6 pm, the Aargauer Kuratorium will award its visual arts work grants. At the same time the Neue Aargauer Bank AG will present its annual advancement award to a young artist.
