'Suburbia Revisited' & 'Eulogy Series' In Encaustic

Denise Bibro Fine Art, 529 West 20th Street, Chelsea, NYC, is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition of Rachael Friedberg, 'Suburbia Revisited' & 'Eulogy Series' In Encaustic, from March 6- April 5, 2003.

Friedberg utilizes wood panels and the ancient technique of encaustic, in which powdered pigments are suspended in a wax medium. She builds up the surface of each painting, layer by layer, resulting in a translucent “skin” with a worn, pitted and or porous texture. She then draws on the surface in oil stick dipped in wax, or scratches images directly into the wax itself. Friedberg primarily works in series. Each series evolves after a painstaking process of numerous sketches.

Friedberg’s encaustic paintings include symbolic figures and iconic images balanced with geometrical shapes. Objects and symbols often suggest a deeper and more elusive meaning. The viewer is provoked to explore the narrative of the paintings on a deeper level. Friedberg’s works have literal and metaphoric levels of meaning - making emotional connections with the viewer. The surprising juxtapositions of images, colors, and words tell us something about the artist’s own personal experiences. She manages to be at once selective and inclusive.

Signs, emblems, and themes play and important role in Friedberg’s paintings. Well known art historian, Linda Nochlin goes on to describe Friedbergs works …..
