Artist-Led initiatives by Kenneth Goldsmith, Raul Cardenas Osuna, Xaviera Simmons, and Caroline Woolard will engage the public in creative collaboration and interaction. Program Launches January 23 with Multi-Sensory Dinner Event.
The Museum of Modern Art announces Artists Experiment, a new
initiative that brings together four contemporary artists to create and lead innovative, experimental
public programs in the Museum for the winter/spring 2013 season. Artists include Kenneth
Goldsmith, author, poet, and founding editor of the online archive UbuWeb; Raúl Cárdenas
Osuna, founder and director of Torolab, a collective workshop and laboratory based in Tijuana,
Mexico; Xaviera Simmons, an artist whose practice includes installations, sculptures, photography,
audio, and performance works; and Caroline Woolard, artist, activist, and cofounder of
OurGoods.org and Trade School.coop, two barter economies for cultural producers. Working
closely with MoMA educators, each is contributing to a series of events, interactions, and experiences
that use MoMA as a space for public engagement, creative collaboration, and artist interaction.
Artists Experiment launches on January 23 with Capital Exchange: A Dinner Event (sold
out). The four participating artists have designed a special multi-sensory dinner, including a three-
course menu developed by Cárdenas Osuna, in collaboration with Torolab's Chef Diego Becerra and
Chef Lynn Bound of MoMA’s Cafe 2. Inspired by classic 20th-century New York cuisine and executed
with a modern-day ethnic twist, the meal is presented to guests along with a set of place mats by
Xaviera Simmons inspired by artworks related to major political movements of the 20th and 21st
centuries. The evening reflects a common theme in each of the participating artists' ongoing
programs: the exploration of different notions of "capital," ranging from the social and political to the
cultural and historical. Performances, music, and readings by Kenneth Goldsmith, Caroline Woolard,
Xaviera Simmons, and special guests will be featured.
“As the nature of artistic practice expands, artists are engaging with a range of disciplines and
increasingly looking to people and the spaces around them to serve as partners in an ongoing creative
collaboration,” said Pablo Helguera, Director, Adult and Academic Programs. “Artists Experiment
aims to foster these types of interactions, situating MoMA as a laboratory for experimentation with
public engagement and providing visitors with direct access to a diverse group of artists and writers.”
Artists Experiment continues the Museum’s long history of experimental and participatory
programming that began under the auspices of Victor D’Amico, the founding director of
MoMA’s Department of Education. From 1937 to 1969, D’Amico championed art education in the
museum setting through innovations that are now standard offerings in museums around the world.
At MoMA these included classes for military personnel at the War Veterans’ Art Center, and for
children and families at the People’s Art Center; circulating exhibitions for local students through the
New York City High Schools Program; participatory creative experiences at the Children’s Art Carnival
in its many versions at MoMA and in Milan, Brussels, Barcelona, various cities in India, and its
eventual home in Harlem; and summer art instruction programs at The Art Barge, on eastern Long
Island.
Artists Experiment programs are open to the public. Space is limited. For more information,
