comunicato stampa

Alliance française de Singapour presents ‘Between eyes’ by Francesca Caruana. This contemporary art exhibition features around 30 to 40 pieces of art works both graphite material and mixed media paintings, and installations made of foliages, ropes and bones.

They are inspired by memories of the Oceania region and objects used for rituals to portray the observation of distinct societal groups such as living and non-living things. Through this art, the artist wishes to unite these groups strongly with the colour Black, a non-colour as she describe, as their eternal link.

Artist Statement

The language is not only words, images also convey humbles messages. Notably, the color gesture convey movement, a colourful shade chosen among thousands, a particular form linked to the tone, to the speed... Those make up the accent of gesture. Finally, ideas conjured up by like-looking forms, or feelings created by a cohesion of little emotions sufficient to transform the initial look. The eyes not only see, they are smuggler of images.

In this creative context, I suggest paintings impregnated with Oceanian memories, with ritualized objects converted to contemporary art. Those came from rejects, and on the face of it are useless.

It matters for me to make them alive again in a way they speak another language, an enlarged language, universal and renewed. Works represent the observation of distinct societal groups (animals, humans, sea/land etc.) tied with a gesture, with a will of fluency between animate and inanimate things: the black color, the graphite, which is a “non-color” used as an eternal link between what it is said and the image. Above all, it is a diversion of function.
