Wait, We Not Spanish? The event presents personal/artistic testimonies of abstract identities inside and outside of the Latino community.
Taking its title from a YouTube series featuring Juan SkittLeZ Ortiz and visual/performance artist Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz, April’s SPEAK UP! asks the featured artists to respond to the question, What is Hispanic Music … Ignore this if you want. Like Raimundi-Ortiz’s artistic investigation of otherness in American culture, Wait, We Not Spanish? presents personal/artistic testimonies of abstract identities inside and outside of the Latino community. Curated by LaTasha Diggs, the evening will feature video works, performance and poetry by Michael Paul Britto, D’Lo, ariel robello and Alexandro Segade.
Poet and vocalist, LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs is the author of TwERK (Belladonna 2013) and has been published in Ploughshares, Jubilat, Fence, LA Review, and Black Renaissance Noir among others. Her performance/video work has been featured at The Kitchen, Exit Art, Recess Activities Inc, The Whitney, Brooklyn Museum, and MoMa. As a curator and artistic director, Diggs has staged events at El Museo del Barrio, Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, Dixon Place, and BAM Café. She is the recipient of several awards; of them include New York Foundation for the Arts, Jerome Foundation, Barbara Deming Memorial Fund, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and The Eben Demarest Trust. She lives in Harlem.
