111 CONSTRUCTIONS WITH 10 MODULES AND 10 WORKERS
We are pleased to invite you to our third one person exhibition of Santiago Sierra in our gallery. There will be on display works of the performance, entitled '111 constructions with 10 modules and 10 workers'. The artist did this performance before the opening with no public invited in the gallery space. The works on display are 111 black and white photographs, in the format of 50 x 75 cm each (approximatly 20 x 30 inches) and the ten used modules. The concept was to find 10 workers who would hold up these ten plaster boards, in the format of 100 x 100 x 2.5 cm (appr. 40 x 40 x 1 ins.) according the artist's instructions in divers positions. The results are 111 variations, at will of the artist but in between the first and the last position. The first construction shows the ten volunteers protected behind the plaster boards, the last position shows them burried under these very boards. This work is tipical of Santiago Sierra's approach to his minimalist artist roots and also of his social and sociological concern.
Santiago Sierra, who was born in Spain in 1966 and has been living in Mexico City since 1995, is one of the most controversial artists of the younger generation. By the 50th Venice Biennial 2003, at the latest, he caught the attention of a broad audience overnight when he had the main entrance of the Spanish pavilion walled up.
Opening reception: 14th May, 6 – 8 pm. The show runs until July 24.
The artist will be present during the opening. Please contact Claudia Friedli (phone +41 1 440 3931) for presse images or further information.
Santiago Sierra's one person show at the Kunsthaus Bregenz runs till 23rd of May. There is a catalog available in English and German.
