comunicato stampa

Wolfgang Tillmans is the winner of the 2000 Turner Prize.

Tillmans was born in 1968 in Remscheid, Germany. He studied photography at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design, from 1990 to 1992. He has since lived and worked in New York and London. In 1995 he was awarded the Böttcherstrasse Prize in Bremen, and later that year the ars viva Prize from the Kulturkreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft. In 1998 and 1999 he was Guest-Professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (School of Fine Arts), Hamburg. He has participated extensively in group exhibitions worldwide, and has had numerous solos shows including I didn't Inhale, at the Chisenhale Gallery, London in 1997. Recent solo exhibitions include Wako Works of Art, Tokyo 1999, Eins ist sicher:Es kommt immer ganz anders als man denkt, Stadtische Galerie, Remscheid 1999, and Soliders/Space Between Two Buildings at Interim Art, London 1999. His work can be seen in The British Art Show 5, currently touring. Tillmans has also published a total of nine books including most recently two artists' books, Total Solar Eclipse 1999 and Wako Book 1999.

Tillmans first came to public attention in the early 1990s with his photo spreads placed in cult magazines such as I-d and Interview , using them as an extension of the gallery. His direct, seemingly casual style of photography was apt at capturing memorable scenes from contemporary life - whether focusing on night-clubbers, eco-warriors or gay pride activists - and he was swiftly hailed as the chronicler of his generation. His work is now more often seen on the walls of a gallery than in the pages of a magazine, but this fluidity is characteristic of Tillmans, who blurs the distinction between staged and documentary photography, and the boundaries between photography and art.

The Turner Prize is awarded to a British artist under fifty, or an artist working in Britain, for an outstanding presentation of their work in the last year. The £20,000 prize, established by Tate's Patrons of New Art in 1984, is intended to promote public discussion of new developments in contemporary British art. It is widely recognised as one of the most important and prestigious awards for the visual arts in Europe.
