comunicato stampa

The doors of the present Whitechapel Art gallery opened in March 1901. As the first space built with the purpose of offering temporary exhibitions to a mass audience, the Gallery has a rich and unique history of, in the words of its founders, Henrietta and Canon Samuel Barnett, 'bringing the finest art of the world to the people of East London.'

Spanning the diverse programmes and activites held here over the century, the Centenary will be an exciting opportunity to celebrate our independent tradition and enduring ideals, look forward to our second century and enlist the participation of a constellation of artists, visitors, teachers, students, curators, writers, funders and local residents.

The celebrations will feature an Exhibition of around 85 works chosen from previous shows, some that have since acquired iconic status and others reflecting more personal choices, with works selected by artists Anish Kapoor and Rosemarie Trockel in conjunction with Nicholas Serota and Catherine Lampert; a formidable, but affordable, Centenary Review with both scholarly and visual contributions, joined by a Documentary Space that links to the archives of the Whitechapel Art Gallery and the Whitechapel Library; and a series of Live Events held both at the Gallery and in the surrounding areas.
