...to Honor Maestro DeRenzi's 20th Anniversary at
Sarasota Opera
Sarasota Opera’s OPERA BALL, the most anticipated date of the Sarasota
social calendar, is set for December 22, 2001.
The Ball will be the first event
held in The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota’s Grand Ballroom, celebrating Victor
DeRenzi’s remarkable achievements during his 20 years as Artistic Director
and Principal Conductor of Sarasota Opera (see attached).
The evening will
feature cocktails, a lavish dinner, a tribute to Maestro DeRenzi, and ballroom
dancing well into the evening.
"Maestro DeRenzi has shown a wonderful commitment to Sarasota, and it is
obvious from people’s response to this ball what an impact he has made on this
community and that his contributions are recognized and valued by many
people in the opera world." says Susan Danis, the Opera’s Executive Director.
"This is the most remarkable response I have ever seen for a fund raising event
in this community" commented Mrs. Elisabeth Gonye, the Opera Ball chair.
"We have not even sent out the invitations and are already receiving a
tremendous response." she continues. Mrs. Gonye, who headed last year’s
elegant Verdi’s Requiem Mass Dinner, has been involved with the Opera since
1981. In addition to her many fund raising activities during that time, she served
as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1982 to 2000. She and her late
husband Dr. Laszlo Gonye were the founding members of the Opera Club - a
private club in the Sarasota Opera House. Since arriving in Sarasota, Mrs.
Gonye has easily raised over 1.5 million dollars for various Sarasota arts and
social institutions.
The Opera Ball is co-sponsored by the Donna Wolf Steigerwaldt Foundation.
The foundation is a philanthropic non-profit corporation founded by the late
Donna Wolf Steigerwaldt over twenty years ago.
The foundation distributes
funds for educational and charitable purposes within the United States. The
Donna Wolf Steigerwaldt Foundation has been a major supporter of Sarasota
Opera as a co-producer for the past ten years and as a patron of the Grand
Finale Campaign.
Opera Ball Committee members include:
Betsy Bagby, B.J. Creighton, JoAnn Frye, Carol Green, Ilse Kern, Betsy
Hinrichs, Edna Rogers, Helen Rogers, Pat Silver, Iris Starr and Sally Schule.
About the Sarasota Opera
In 2002 Sarasota Opera celebrates Victor DeRenzi’s 20th anniversary as
Artistic Director of Sarasota Opera. Under DeRenzi’s leadership the opera is
just past the mid-point in a multi-year commitment to perform the complete
works of Giuseppe Verdi. For the 2002 season Verdi’s Le Trouvère will
continue the internationally recognized Verdi Cycle and Masterworks Revival
Series. Verdi prepared this French Il trovatore for Paris, and the Sarasota
production will include the rarely performed ballet. Donizetti’s Lucia di
Lammermoor (sung in Italian), Mozart’s Così fan tutte (sung in Italian), and
Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos (sung in German) completes the list of
major productions for the winter season which runs from February 2 to March
23. For all opera performances, English translations are projected above the
stage.
