Palladio — 500 years is presented on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the birth of “the most imitated architect in history” and whose “influence on the development of English and American architecture probably has been greater than that of all Renaissance architects combined.” The exhibit consists of a selection of photographs displaying Palladio’s architectural projects for private residences in the Veneto Region, provided by Istituto Regionale Ville Venete and highlight the stylistic evolution of the architect’s more than forty years of activity.

The exhibition is enriched by six splendid original publications, printed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, from the collection of the The Ryerson and Burnham Libraries of The Art Institute of Chicago and from the Rare Book Collection of the University Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Visitors will have a rare opportunity to view up close the first edition from 1570 of Palladio’s The Four Books of Architecture, his 1575 magnificent engravings illustrating Ceasar’s wars, the illustrations of the 1556 publication of Vitruvius’ Ten Books of Architecture, based on Palladio’s drawings, and other original books by his contemporaries Sebastiano Serlio and Martino Bassi. Curated by Stefano Questioli, the exhibition celebrates the timeless beauty of Palladio’s genius, which originated in a small region of the Veneto and has gone on to conquer the world of architecture.

Bruce Boucher is the Curator of Sculpture at The Art Institute of Chicago. Former Professor of History of Art at University College, London, he is author of numerous books and articles on Italian art and architecture, among them The Sculpture of Jacopo Sansovino (1991), Andrea Palladio: The Architect in his Time (1994), Italian Baroque Sculpture (1998), and Earth and Fire: Italian Terracotta Sculpture from Donatello to Canova (2001).
