Works on Paper. The exhibition documents the complete range of Tadeusz' graphic skills from all eras of his creative career right up to the present day. The spectrum extends from brilliant still lifes and nude drawings to paintings on paper, watercolours and gouaches, as well as collages and overpainted photographs in which Tadeusz investigates compositional and spatial relationships. The show rounds off with a selection of exquisite graphic prints.
The basis of Norbert Tadeusz’ painting can be found in his vast oeuvre of graphic works. Their fascinating variety is now the focal point of an exhibition that has been made possible by a generous donation, thanks to which important complexes of around 100 works on paper in each case have found their way to the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München and to the Dresdner Kupferstich-Kabinett.
“Düsseldorf was ‘Persil’ city – art was always white.” With this comment Norbert Tadeusz (b. 1940) described the time when he embarked on his artistic career at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts. The ubiquitous trend towards abstraction at that time was something vehemently opposed by the artist – one of the first pupils in the master class held by Joseph Beuys who had been appointed professor a little time early. Despite all the scepticism shown, Tadeusz’ work has always remained figurative.
The exhibition documents the complete range of Tadeusz’ graphic skills from all eras of his creative career right up to the present day. The spectrum extends from brilliant still lifes and nude drawings to paintings on paper, watercolours and gouaches, as well as collages and overpainted photographs in which Tadeusz investigates compositional and spatial relationships. The show will be rounded off with a selection of exquisite graphic prints.
In Room 31 in the Pinakothek der Moderne a presentation of paintings by the artist will be displayed at the same time as the exhibition. In this way, a comprehensive panorama of Norbert Tadeusz’ both sensual and formally thoroughly inspiring world of motifs can be enjoyed to the full. In his works the artist opens up ever new ways to access the world of objects and provides new interpretations of these which result in autonomous compositions of striking beauty being created from banal and frequently coincidental motifs.
An exhibition catalogue with contributions by M. Semff and C. Quaeitzsch, published by Hatje Cantz, will be available.
