Future Focus exhibition in QUAD, Derby, showcases emerging and established talents from the East Midlands.
Future Focus, a new exhibition of emerging and established talents from the East Midlands region, will be on display in QUAD Gallery, Corridors and Digital screens from 9th May until 20th June. The exhibition will feature new commissions by Future Focus Bursary Scheme winners: Rebekka Bojanowski, Nick Buxton, Neil Dixon, Kirsty Michelle Hayes and Andrew Martyn Sugars.
Future Focus looks at the fascinating territory of utopia and possible future, investigating ideas of space and time. Neil Dixon, Kirsty Michelle Hayes and Andrew Martyn Sugars touch the idea of utopia via tangible elements and a physical approach, while Rebekka Bojanowski and Nick Buxton use a narrative form to visualise a utopia through memory and imagination.
Derby-based artists will also feature in the QUAD Corridor Galleries and Digital screens. Clive Wheeler and George Harris adopt a two-dimensional approach to address three-dimensional, architectural utopia while Scott Green, Tracy Meek and the Five Lamps Films collective investigate the mythological features behind our common daily life. Future Focus is a long running series of exhibitions selected biennially by QUAD staff from Degree shows across the region. Future Focus also provides professional development for the Bursary winners.
“Future Focus represents a rare opportunity for a recent graduate to step into the 'institutional circuit’. Very few such opportunities exist, as a lot of ex graduate or emergent artists shows are in commercial galleries.” Alfredo Cramerotti, QUAD Curator.
Alfredo added “Future Focus is a key event as it represents a continuation of the QUAD programme exploring the different layers of contemporary art production. So while we bring the legacy of an artist like Ian Breakwell and showcase his relevance in the current artistic panorama, in Future Focus we offer a look at ‘possible futures’ of less established artists. QUAD thus aims to both build on the legacy of the past and the relevance of the present.”
Future Focus events include a QUAD Curators Tour of the exhibition on Tuesday 25th May from 12:30pm to 1:30pm.This free tour offers an opportunity to hear about the artist’s ideas and to find out more about the exhibition.
There will also be an Artists’ Talk on Tuesday 15th June from 12:30pm to 2:00pm.
Future Focus is Curated by QUAD, mentored by David Gilbert of re:place site-specific contemporary art in Derbyshire and supported by the University of Derby, Derby City Council and Arts Council England.
