This exhibition represents the final phase of the Kawing project, a
partnership between 24HR and The Asialink Centre at The University of
Melbourne. A group of four NT artists conducted 1- 2 month residencies in
Cebu, Baguio, Palawan & Davao in the Philippines in December 2001 and
January 2002. During their time in the Philippines the artists exhibited
their own work, held workshops, made new work and soaked up local culture in
their respective regional centres.
This exhibition is the culmination of the process. Each of the artists has
responded in the form of sculptural installation and each has used organic
materials, such as paper and cane. Much of the work is also influenced by
traditional techniques or materials used in the Philippines and is inspired
by social and cultural phenomena that the artists observed during their
residencies.
Accompanying the exhibition is an exchange project called Kawing Gawa. This
is a small post card installation, which is a response by some of the
Filipino artists that the Kawing residents came into contact with during
their stays. It is hoped that continuing exchange and dialogue will
eventuate as a result of these initiatives.
