Lucio Pozzi

STUDIO STEFANIA MISCETTI è lieto di presentare una mostra personale di Lucio Pozzi, dal titolo se ti giri, vedi l’orizzonte che si addensa, che si snoda attraverso opere appositamente realizzate per l’occasione e altri lavori recenti, tutti accomunati “per pura coincidenza”, come afferma l’artista, da una serie di forature. Fin dagli anni ’70, Lucio Pozzi ha usato l’Arte Concettuale come punto di partenza per mettere in discussione i presupposti dell’arte, andando in cerca dell’intensità e dell’ispirazione attraverso un continuo avvicendamento di esperienze artistiche differenziate. La sua produzione continua a muoversi tra quadri figurativi e astratti, lavori fotografici, azioni, installazioni e video.

“Non conosco esattamente le finalità della mia arte. La faccio così, esistenzialmente, tanto per esserci. (…) Cerco di tenermi sempre sul filo del rasoio del fare. Lavoro ritornando di volta in volta a combinazioni di matrici che spero siano sempre più varie, ciascuna un’eco di sentimenti e pensieri diversi. So che non v’è modo di evitare i segni della mia persona e del mio tempo, per questo, invece di dirigere quello che faccio, mi arrendo all’impulso che sorge dagli strati dell’esperienza. Così da anni mi ritrovo a spaziare da eventi contemplativi vicini al vuoto a immagini affollate che sorgono dal preconscio; dalla pittura alle pantomime, alle architetture costruite”. Lucio Pozzi

I 40 Pianeti Rossi (2010) piccole tavole di compensato traforate e dipinte in smalto rosso lucido sono affollate all’inizio del percorso espositivo, diradandosi verso l’entrata della sala principale in modo analogo alla presenza dei fori al loro interno. L’aspetto economico e le modalità di vendita fanno parte dell’opera stessa come in un gioco: il primo si vende ad un prezzo molto basso ed ogni successivo acquisto aumenta di poco il costo del prossimo. I tre grandi fogli di carta del Crowd Group (2011) realizzati per questa mostra, tutti in bianco e nero e raffiguranti immagini complesse in cui il biomorfo si sovrappone al geometrico, spiccano dalla parete di fondo della sala principale. In mostra inoltre le due carte del gruppo New Traces (2011), costituite di una velatura di colore acrilico nero che rivela profili geometrici tracciati nella carta con la punta di un coltello, riprendendo esperienze iniziate negli anni ’70, e The Eyes of Selene (2004), un calco a sabbia in alluminio con escrescenze di ottone.

Lucio Pozzi è nato a Milano nel 1935. Dopo aver vissuto qualche anno a Roma dove ha studiato architettura, si è stabilito a New York nel 1962. Le sue opere sono inizialmente esposte presso gallerie come l’Ariete, Bykert, John Weber, Gian Enzo Sperone, Yvon Lambert, Leo Castelli e in istituzioni tra cui il MOMA di New York.
Nel ’77 il suo lavoro è presentato a Documenta 6 e nel ‘80 alla Biennale di Venezia, nel Padiglione Americano. Oggi vive e lavora a Valeggio sul Mincio (VR) e Hudson (NY).
Le sue opere sono presenti in numerose collezioni, tra le quali: The New York Public Library; The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; The Fogg Museum, Harvard U. Pozzi è stato premiato con il National Endowment for the Arts nel 1983 ed un Diploma Honoris Causa dall’Accademia di Verona nel 2010. Retrospettive della sua arte si sono tenute alla Kunsthalle Bielefeld (1982) ed al Badischer Kunstverein (1983), in Germania, al Museum of New Art, Detroit (2001) e al Kalamazoo Institute of Art, Michigan (2002), al Museo di Villa Croce, Genova, Italia, (2006).Ha insegnato alla Cooper Union, al Sculpture Graduate Program della Yale University, alla Princeton University e al Maryland Institute of Art. È ogni tanto visiting professor nei programmi MFA e BFA della School of Visual Arts di New York, dove è stato membro della facoltà dal 1974 al 2009. Attualmente insegna alla Accademia Cignaroli di Verona e alla Libera Accademia di Brescia.

if you turn you may see the horizon thickens
paintings and a floor object

STUDIO STEFANIA MISCETTI is pleased to present a solo show by Lucio Pozzi, with the title if you turn you may see the horizon thickens, consisting of works specially realized for this occasion and other recent ones, all happening to share, as the artist notices, the same kind of holes drilled in them. Since the 70s, Lucio Pozzi used Conceptual Art as a starting point for questioning the assumptions of art, seeking intensity and inspiration through a continuous alternation of different artistic experiences. Today, his production continues to move between abstract and figurative paintings, photographic works, actions, installations and video.

“I do not know the exact purpose of my art. I do it like that, existentially, just to be there. (...) I try to keep always on the cutting edge of doing. I work going back from time to time to combinations of matrices that I hope will be ever more varied, each one of them as an echo of different thoughts and feelings. I know that there is no way to avoid the mark of my person and of my time, and so, instead of directing what I do, I surrender to the impulses that arise from the layers of experience. So, for years, I have found myself alternating between contemplative events approaching the void and crowded images that arise from the preconscious; from painting to pantomime, to constructed architectures." The 40 Red Planets (2010) small wooden boards drilled with various holes and painted in red gloss enamel are crowded near the entrance of the gallery and then scatter towards the main room in the same way they themselves are pockmarked by drilled holes. The economical aspect and the selling procedures are part of the work, like in a game: the first is sold at a very low price and any subsequent purchase just increases the cost of the next. The three large paintings on paper from the Crowd Group (2011) realized for this exhibition, all in black on white and depicting complex images in which the biomorphic combines with the geometric, stand out from the back wall of the main hall. Finally, there are also two paper works of the recent New Traces group (2011), made of a thin glaze of acrylic paint, which reveal geometric profiles etched with a knife into the paper’s surface, continuing experiences started in the '70s, and The Eyes of Selene (2004), an aluminium sand cast to which are added two small brass excrescences.

Lucio Pozzi was born in Milan in 1935. After living a few years in Rome where he studied architecture, he moved to New York in 1962. His works began to be shown in galleries such as Ariete, Bykert, John Weber, Gian Enzo Sperone, Yvon Lambert, Leo Castelli and in Institutions such as, among the others, the MOMA of New York.
In 1977 his work is presented at Documenta 6 and in 1980 at the Venice Biennale, in the American Pavillion. He currently lives and works in Hudson (NY) and Valeggio s/M (Verona) Italy. His art is represented in the collections of: The New York Public Library; The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; The Fogg Museum, Harvard U. Contemp. Art., Genova Italy (2005). He has taught at the Cooper Union, Yale Graduate Sculpture Program, Princeton University and the Maryland Institute of Art. He currently is occasional professor at the MFA and BFA programs of the School of Visual Arts where he taught for thirty years, in New York, at the Accademia Cignaroli, in Verona, and Libera Accademia, in Brescia, Italy.
