These machines have ghosts built in

Private View 31 October 6.30 8.30 pm

Moving Parts represents the work of eight artists: Robert Currie, Martin Firrell, Simon Hollington & Kypros Kyprianou, Debbie Lawson, Nicola Morriss, Nik Ramage and Dave Williams, who use movement in their work. Automata, machines and contraptions: autonomous devices with a life beyond the artists' design and the audiences' expectation.

Nik Ramage, exhibition co-ordinator, explains: Å’For some movement is the subject matter, for others it is a means. Some examine the utility associated with machines and their position as servants or set machines up in a self-defeating parody. The works perform over time and have an inherent or overt narrative; many have a dark undercurrent, an air of threat or collapse. The tone of the show varies from contemplative to humorous but never merely foolish.'

Robert Currie and Dave Williams both present their versions of drawing machines. On a plinth rests the non-entity that is Martin Firrell's Å’Unconstructable Machine'. Collapse is a constant danger for Nicola Morriss' fabric houses, sustained only by air, and for Nik Ramage's Å’Orbit' as it wearily treads its path. On a wall, is a clock by Hollington and Kyprianou, unsure as to how to proceed in a quantum universe. Debbie Lawson fills the air with flying books.
