AfterARCO, which brings the content of the fair to Madrid, offers screenings, installations, concerts and other activities in the city

Madrid will once again be the meeting place for contemporary art professionals worldwide, with the 31st edition of ARCOmadrid, organised by IFEMA and held from 15 to 19 February at Feria de Madrid. Gallerists, curators, critics, museum directors, artists and collectors will come together for five days to take part in the exhibition programme and in the different activities and initiatives complementing the Fair.

Halls 8 and 10 of Feria de Madrid show the selections of 160 international galleries in the General Programme, and 62 in the curated programmes. FOCUS: THE NETHERLANDS includes the participation of 14 Dutch galleries; OPENING, a selection of 25 European galleries, and SOLO PROJECTS: FOCUS LATIN AMERICA, 23 galleries from the American continent.

The art world meets in Madrid
ARCOmadrid continues to be a space for cultural cross-fertilisation between Latin America and Europe. One of its most exciting new features, attracting prestigious figures in the art world, will be the 1st Meeting of European and Latin American Museums, led by Agustín Pérez-Rubio, the director of MUSAC, León, and Marcelo Mattos Araujo, executive director of Pinacoteca de Sao Paulo. This meeting will bring together figures such as Chris Dercon, Director, Tate Modern, London; Manuel Borja-Villel, Director, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Hans-Michael Herzog, Director and Curator, Daros Latinamerica Collection, Zurich; Alfred Pacquement, Director, Musée national d'art moderne/Centre de création industrielle, Centre Pompidou, Paris, and Graciela de la Torre, Director, Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo MUAC, Mexico. Similarly, the Collecting Forum will attract outstanding professionals such as Han Nefkens, Mera and Don Rubell, Joop van Caldenborgh, Farhad Farjam and Eugenio López, and the Professional Meetings bring together leading art world figures such as Marc-Olivier Wahler, director, Palais de Tokyo, Paris; James Lingwood, co-director, Artangel, London; Bartomeu Marí, director, Museu d'Art Contemporani, Barcelona (Macba); Lynne Cooke, deputy director for conservation, research and publication, Museo Reina Sofía; Inti Guerrero, artistic director of TEOR/éTica, San José (Costa Rica), and RMS La Asociación, together with Tania Pardo, independent curator.

Together with these attendees, thanks to the ARCOmadrid initiatives to make the meeting a success and promote the Fair as a platform for the art market, the International Collectors' Programme is again being offered, inviting some 200 active collectors worldwide proposed by the participating galleries, and leading art consultants. Important international museum groups whose patrons and friends have been invited to visit the fair will also be present.

Encouraging collecting is also the focus of the First Collector Programme coordinated by Elisa Hernando, from the consultancy Arte Global. For the second year in a row it will offer advice in the context of the fair on starting a collection and acquiring works of art at ARCOmadrid.

215 galleries from 29 countries show the best of contemporary art
ARCOmadrid 2012 brings together the selections of 160 galleries in its General Programme, plus 62 in the curated programmes. A total of 215 galleries from 29 countries showing the best of contemporary art.

Also, two outstanding new features will showcase the fair's exhibition space. “Featured Artist”, an initiative reflecting the quality of ARCOmadrid as a space for discovering new artists, and a platform for the presentation of gallery programmes. All the galleries have been invited to create a special presentation of an artist, and these have been gathered in a new publication, the Artists' Book. Another new feature is the Solo Objects programme, presenting twelve large-scale projects, sculptures and installations, shown in three of the fair's spaces. An enormous sculpture by Jaume Plensa, an installation based on food cans by Marius Engh and the reproduction of a New York staircase by Isidro Blasco are some of the works forming this new exhibition.

The Netherlands, guest of honour at ARCOmadrid
One of the main attractions of this edition of the fair is FOCUS THE NETHERLANDS, a project supported by the Mondriaan Fund and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Spain, and the participation of the curator Xander Karskens, head of the international contemporary art collection of the Hallen Museum, Haarlem, who was commissioned to select the 14 Dutch galleries participating in the Guest Country programme.

This project, which brings the most important collectors, curators and art critics to Madrid, is completed by The Dutch Assembly, curated by the Latitudes curatorial office (Max Andrews and Mariana Cánepa Luna). A specific space in ARCOmadrid for the participation of Dutch cultural and artistic institutions, and for performances, discussions and screenings, among other activities designed to encourage visitor interaction.

The presence of Dutch art in Madrid will extend to the city's main museums and art centres, with exhibitions, shows and initiatives, such as the Museo Reina Sofía's exhibition of the painter René Däniels in Palacio de Velázquez, and a performance by Falke Pisano in the museum itself; La Casa Encendida, with a group show of Dutch artists; the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, with Mondrian, De Stijl and the Dutch artistic tradition; Matadero Madrid, with a show by Navid Nuur and a screening of work by Nathaniel Mellors and Gabriel Lester, in the Cineteca; and CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, with a show by the artist Aernout Mik.

Finally, the Netherlands is also present in the new project AfterARCO, offering activities in different spaces in Madrid (screenings, music, etc.).

Opening – Young European Galleries
In this new edition, the fair again presents the section Opening: young European galleries, designed for galleries from different European countries which are les than seven years old. This programme was extremely well received in the last edition, and a number of the emerging galleries that took part have expressed an interest in coming back to the fair. On this occasion the galleries were selected by Manuel Segade, curator and art critic, who chose a total of 25 galleries from ten European countries, including two from the Netherlands, suggested by the curator Xander Karskens.

Solo Projects – Latin America
The Solo Projects: Focus Latin America will be a good opportunity to discover the creations and projects of young Latin American artists. In this edition, the programme is even more clearly a space for discovering creation in Latin America, thanks to the work of six curators partnering with ARCOmadrid: Cauê Alves (Brazil), Sonia Becce (Argentina), Patrick Charpenel (Mexico), Alexia Dumani (Costa Rica), Manuela Moscoso (Colombia/Ecuador) and José Ignacio Roca (Colombia), who have selected 23 artists from eleven Latin American countries, with the collaboration of AECID, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.

Exclusive spaces
Collectors, professionals and other guests of the Fair will have their own meeting place in the ARCOmadrid VIP lounge. It was designed this year by Teresa Sapey + IKEA, winners of the compeitition for ideas held in collaboration with AD Architectural Digest.

Visitors can also enjoy other spaces such as the Friends of ARCO Lounge, a rest area featuring a selection of contemporary photography in three differentiated areas: one dedicated to the BESart Collection of Banco Espirito Santo; another on the ARCO Photographic Routes, and a third which will show 11 works created by Mira Bernabeu in the 2010 fair, with 20th century furniture on loan from L.A. Estudio and Gandía Blasco. There will also be spaces for relaxation atillycaffe, a project created in collaboration with the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto; Heineken® Art Plein, a space designed in the style of Dutch town squares, with flower stands, newspaper kiosks, beer stands, wall gardens and bicycles, as well as the Shushita, Bombay Sapphire Lounge and Coca Cola Light spaces.

New this year, the fair will offer ARCOkids, a space for children in partnership with the Pequeño Deseo Foundation, with workshops to encourage creativity for children aged 4 to 14.

A complete Expert Forum
There will also be a place for knowledge transfer and the exchange of ideas and experiences at the fair through the Expert Forum. There will be forums on Collecting, including panels, two coordinated by Rosa Martinez and one by Peter Timoshenko, and four collecting case studies: Corporate collections of contemporary art, directed by Aline Pujo, director, International Association of Corporate Collections of Contemporary Art IACCCA, Paris and Sabrina Kamstra, chair, Netherlands Association of Corporate Art Collections VBCN, Amsterdam; Art Advisors on building a collection, by Amy Goldrich, lawyer and collector. Contemporary art buyers' groups in Belgium, coordinated by the Nepos Collection, and finally, one presenting a selection of Spanish collections supporting art from an expansive view of the collecting concept, and the creation of exhibition spaces, the creation of awards or Master's degrees.

Meanwhile, after the success of last year and with the support of AC/E - Acción Cultural Española - the Professional Meetings will bring together personalities invited by Marc-Olivier Wahler, director of Palais de Tokyo; James Lingwood, co-director of Artangel; Bartomeu Marí, director, Museu d'Art Contemporani, Barcelona (Macba); Lynne Cooke, deputy director for conservation, research and publication, Museo Reina Sofía; Inti Guerrero, artistic director of TEOR/éTica, San José (Costa Rica), and RMS La Asociación, together with Tania Pardo, independent curator. A unique platform for analysis and debate concerning the artistic object and its production, creation, appreciation and presentation.

There will also be a Public Forum, in partnership with Fundación Banco Santander, including panels invited by important cultural institutions such as the Italian Institute of Culture, Madrid; the Goethe-Institut and Casa Asia, among others.

Awards at ARCOmadrid
ARCOmadrid has become the backdrop for the presentation of many different awards recognising artistic creation, collecting and the work of young artists. On one hand, the Friends of ARCO Association will present the “A” Awards for Collecting, on this occasion recognising the collections of Fundación Banco Santander, in the Corporate Collecting category; the Han Nefkens Collection, from the Netherlands, for International Collecting, and the Victorino Rosón Collection, for Private Collecting. Meanwhile, the 9th edition of the ARCO Comunidad de Madrid Award for young artists will reward the best tangible work of art shown at the fair by artists aged under 40. There will also be the 2nd edition of the Heineken-CA2M Award, and the 5th edition of the illy Sustain Art Award, which promotes the work of young Latin American artists taking part in the Solo Projects Programme. During the fair, the ARCOmadrid/BEEP Award for electronic art will be awarded. Now in its 7th year, the award seeks to promote the research, production and exhibition of art linked to new technology. Finally, the photography and image school EFTI, together with a jury, has selected four of its students to be the official photographers of ARCOmadrid: Olivier Roma; Eduardo Santamaría; David Schäfer and the partnership of Lusi Alda and Miguel Rojo.

Beyond the halls of ARCOmadrid
For the first time, the AfterARCO programme will be held. This initiative will bring the fair and its activities into the city and infuse its spaces with the vitality of contemporary art. Various spaces in Madrid will host screenings by artists such as Eugenio Ampudia; Guido van der Werve; Jeroen Kooijmans; Lernet & Sander; Pablo Valbuena and Ruth Gómez, interventions in the urban space, such as by Nico Munuera in Plaza de Cibeles, and concerts including the Martin Creed Band and Planetas DJ.

To this we can add the exhibitions which Madrid has prepared for the occasion, such as the German artist Hans Haacke and the Spanish Muntadas, at Museo Reina Sofía; the paintings of the Rubell Family Collection, at Fundación Banco Santander; the contemporary art collections of MACBA-Fundación La Caixa, at Caixa Forum, and many more.

The planned exhibitions are covered, as they are every year, in the Official Catalogue of ARCOmadrid 2012, which can also be downloaded (www.arco.ifema.es), as can infoARCO and the Artists' Book. There is also a free app available for iPhone, iPad and Android.

In addition to the offer at the fair the city of Madrid, has prepared a series of exhibitions for the occasion, such as the show by the German artist Hans Haacke and the Spanish artist Muntadas at the Museo Reina Sofía; Paintings from the Rubell Family Collection at the Fundación Banco Santander, the collections of contemporary art from MACBA-Fundación La Caixa at CaixaForum and many more. The presence of the Netherlands will also be felt in the leading institutions, with works by artists such as
Aernout Mik, Falke Pisano, Gabriel Lester, Nathaniel Mellors, Navid Nuur and René Däniels, among others.

For the first time there will be also the AfterARCO programme that will take the art fair and its activities into the city. Various spaces in Madrid will hold works by artists such as Eugenio Ampudia, Guido van der Werve, Jeroen Kooijmans, Lernet & Sander, Pablo Valbuena and Ruth Gómez, interventions in the urban space, for example like Nico Munuera in Plaza de Cibeles, and concerts, including the Martin Creed Band and Planetas DJ.
