The renowned German sculptor and film maker Rebecca Horn has worked with site-specific installations for the last two decades. Tate has extensive holdings of her work and this display is an opportunity to focus on a number of key works.
Ballet of the Woodpeckers 1986 is a large-scale work featuring several mechanical hammers that appear to strike eight large mirrors, threatening to shatter the reflections of those viewing the work.
Ballet of the Woodpeckers is presented with a series of sculptures that are concerned with the body, and isolation and vulnerability.
These ‘body extension’ works are designed to be attached to a performer, and the films of these performers and performances are also shown in the display.
