NADA Miami Beach

Deauville Beach Resort, Miami Beach

The fair is recognized as a much needed alternative assembly of the world's youngest and strongest art galleries dealing with emerging Contemporary Art. It is the only major American art fair to be run by a non-profit organization.

comunicato stampa

Each December in Miami, NADA runs a renowned art fair to vigorously pursue our goals of exploring new or underexposed art that is not typical of the “art establishment.” NADA’s fair is held in parallel with Art Basel Miami Beach and is recognized as a much needed alternative assembly of the world’s youngest and strongest art galleries dealing with emerging Contemporary Art. It is the only major American art fair to be run by a non-profit organization.

NADA first launched the art fair in Miami in 2003, with 35 exhibitors in a vacant space located off of Lincoln Road near the Convention Center. In 2003, many [NADA] dealers sold out their booths within hours. Understanding the hunger for emerging work and the contemporary market, NADA hired a new director, Heather Hubbs to execute the next editions of the fair. For the next five years NADA Art Fair was held at the Ice Palace in Miami, where the roots of the fair began to expand. In 2005, NADA fielded about 415 applications for 80 slots.

In 2009, NADA moved the fair to the stately ballrooms and beachside environs of the historic Deauville Beach Resort located on Collins Ave. and 67th St. in North Miami Beach. In efforts to respond to economic downturn, NADAlooked for new ways to lower costs for younger galleries. Moving to North Beach allowed NADA to lower overall booth costs and discounted prices on hotel rooms.

The 2010 edition of the fair was our second year at the Deauville Beach Resort and another great year for NADAexhibitors. Many galleries completely sold out their booths by the end of the Opening Preview.

Artadia
Artadia is delighted to partner with NADA Miami Beach this December, where we will give an unrestricted $4,000 award to an artist exhibiting artwork at the fair in any booth. The selected artist will also join the Artadia family and receive all lifetime privileges of the Artadia awardees, including access to Artadia’s national network, the option to participate in Artadia programs, such as our New York Residency program, our publications and exhibitions program and professional services. The award is generously funded by Artadia founder and president Christopher E. Vroom and will be announced on Friday, December 7th.

A jury compromising of two internationally renowned curators will walk through the fair on its opening day, Thursday, December 6, to determine the award recipient. The names of the jurors will be announced on Friday, December 7.

Video Program
Under My Skin
curated by Grela Orihuela
A phrase lifted from the lyrical echoes of Sinatra in the very same spot where the Ratpack threw back the Jack in Miami. The impetuous ghosts of the original jetset commingle with an international medley of video artists in a program curated by Grela Orihuela located in the Jazz Club. Under My Skin is an exhibition of body and soul, its characters and conceptions insinuating their yearning and conflicting passions into the cool, dark confines of this historic venue’s iconic lounge.

Hot Bed
This year’s HOTBED student artists are challenged to create a site-specific video work to be exhibited 24/7 at NADA Miami Beach 2012 in the fair venue’s public atrium, as well as on every TV in the Deauville’s 484 guest rooms. None of the students’ primary majors is digital media; they must conceive and produce work using unfamiliar methods, each of them completing a single piece to engage viewers in a busy public space and a most intimate private space.

Courtesy of Wet Heat Project and New World School of the Arts, production budgets from Jorge A Garcia, and the Deauville Beach Resort for donating the guest room for a shoot. Mentor workshop hosted by the Rubell Family Cllection with valuable feedback from video artist Dara Friedman, co-founder RFC Mera Rubell, collector Jorge A Garcia and film festival director Mara Sartore.
