comunicato stampa

The spring season at Bonniers Konsthall starts off with a solo presentation of the acclaimed artist Pilvi Takala.

Takala mainly works with video installations; her work can be described as interventions in everyday life. The exhibition Slight Change includes works where Takala explores social behaviors with humor and comic arbitrariness. By knowingly misinterpreting rules and social codes Takala’s work creates confusion, her careful agenda challenges the social conventions that are so easily taken for granted.

As the exhibition’s title reveals, Slight Chance will include works on the theme of chance. Takala often returns to the possibilities of winning, for instance in lotteries or in the game of poker, the exploration of our perceptions of chance is part of her artistic practice.

The video Players from 2010 shows six financially independent poker player’s everyday lives, how gambling of the cards is a huge part of their newly rich lifestyle, which they even use it to decide who’s paying for dinner.

The installation One in a Million, the most recent piece from 2012, invites us to follow a woman who finds herself without a post code, which means she has lost the possibility to be part of the national Post Code Lottery. Can one be compensated for the loss of the chance to win?

Pilvi Takala was born 1981 in Helsinki and studied at Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. Her work has been shown widely, including Kunsthalle Basel, Berlin Biennale, Istanbul Biennial as well as New Museum’s 2012 Triennial The Ungovernables in New York. She received the Dutch Prix de Rome in 2011. Has taken part in several residency programs such as the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and the Swedish IASPIS.
