The fair presents the most current developments in Dutch and international design. It is a platform for the latest limited editions and one-offs from well-known and upcoming designers working in different design disciplines and various materials.
OBJECT Rotterdam is the fair for contemporary design which takes place during Art Rotterdam. This
year, OBJECT will be held for the first time in the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) which is
part of The New Institute. The upcoming edition of OBJECT Rotterdam takes place from 7 to 10
February 2013.
OBJECT Rotterdam presents limited editions and one-offs at the cutting edge of design, crafts,
fashion, architecture and the visual arts. The fair exhibits the work of national and international,
established and up and coming designers from various design disciplines and using a wide range of
materials. OBJECT Rotterdam is the place for collectors, professionals and other design enthusiasts.
The NAi is part of The New Institute for architecture, design and e-culture, which strengthens the
interaction between different design disciplines. Anne van der Zwaag, the director of OBJECT
Rotterdam, explains: “This location provides OBJECT with a very interesting context. It promises to be
an exciting fair in a dynamic place and a special building.” Rotterdam based Superuse Studios,
formerly 2012Architecten, is in charge of the exhibition design.
Galleries, design institutes and independent designers participate in OBJECT Rotterdam. This edition
presents the work of established designers such as Richard Hutten via Gallery Judy Straten and Tejo
Remy, represented by the Industry Gallery from Washington. Industry Gallery is exhibiting the special
Nijntje collection which Atelier Remy & Veenhuizen designed for the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.
CeramicistMaaike Roozenburg is also introducing a collection in cooperation with a museum,
the Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Her series of crockery, based on historical examples, will
be shown to the public for the first time during OBJECT. The jewelry designer Dinie Besems is also
exhibiting a new project in which she takes part herself!
The collaboration between the Dutch furniture company Pastoe and the photography
duoScheltens&Abbenes is another first. At OBJECT they will exhibit the new centenary cupboard by
Pastoe in combination with a limited edition of the photographers. The cooperation
between Wandschappen and the designer Christien Meinderstma is equally unique. She designed a
special book and project: the collected knitted work by Loes Veenstra from the 2e Carnissestraat in
Rotterdam.
The multidisciplinary character of OBJECT Rotterdam is not the only striking aspect. There is also the
number of young designers taking part in this edition of the fair, such as Studio rENs, Floris
Hovers and Studio Zward, a combination of the jewelry designer Kirsten Spuybroek and the illustrator
Jelmer Noordeman. In addition, there are works by Lina-Marie Koeppen and Roos Gomperts, who
graduated last year from the Design Academy in Eindhoven and are both exhibiting a colorful series of
product designs. Eefje Wijnings from Arnhem is presenting quite the opposite, fashion objects in black
and white.
The Rhode Island school of Art and Design, one of the leading design institutes in the United States
is also represented at OBJECT. They are presenting themselves to the Dutch audience for the first time.
Equally prestigious, the Amsterdam Sandberg Institute is participating in the fair again, and
the Rietveld Academy is taking part for the first time with its jewelry department, as is the ABK
Maastricht.
In addition, design-related initiatives are also represented. “We Like Art Walls,” an extension of “We
Like Art”, is exhibiting work by Maria Roosen, amongst others, and Zetel Foundation is selling ten
unique chairs by leading young designers.
Once again, there is a subsidiary program at OBJECT Rotterdam, with an afternoon of lectures about
crafts at 3 p.m. on Friday 8 February in the nearby Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, on Friday
evening adebate on design with the Dutch magazine Items and on Saturday 9 February a program for
collectors who are starting out, by My first Design Collection.
During OBJECT Rotterdam visitors of both the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum and
the Nederlands Fotomuseum will receive a special discount and fashion hotspot Margreeth
Olsthoorn is partnering with OBJECT as well. The prestigious champagne company Veuve Clicquot,
which has been active in the field of design for many years, is a partner and sponsor of the fair.
