Dieter Roth

Camden Arts Centre, London

Diaries. The exhibition focuses on his diaries with his personal writing as its central theme. These intimate books served as agendas and 'to do' lists as well as a place for the working through of ideas. They were a space to record appointments, addresses, lists and deadlines but also drawings, photographs and poems.

comunicato stampa

Throughout his career, German-Swiss artist Dieter Roth (1930-98) worked with obsessive energy, his prolific output comprising installation, sculpture, drawing, video, assemblages and books. Much of his work was a diary of sorts - a record of his relentless and impassioned engagement with life.

The exhibition focuses on Roth's diaries with his personal writing as its central theme. These intimate books served as agendas and 'to do' lists as well as a place for the working through of ideas. They were a space to record appointments, addresses, lists and deadlines but also drawings, photographs and poems.

The show brings Roth’s diaries to London for the first time as well as the hand-produced, photocopied ‘copybooks’ he made from them and two major installation works.

Dieter Roth: Diaries was organised by The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh in 2012 as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival and has been reconfigured with additional works for Camden Arts Centre.
