The 2003 edition, entitled In Time, has a slightly different focus, and for the first time includes works in two very different media, ceramic and video. Whereas last year the Chinese works of art were chosen by the artists who took part in the exhibition, we decided this year to put together the objects and contemporary works ourselves, in order to further explore what we regard as contextual relationships between the two. The exhibition includes the work of six internationally recognised women artists.
Six Contemporary Artists & Selected Early Chinese Works of Art
Gallery N. von Bartha & Ben Janssens Oriental Art
In 2002, Gallery N. von Bartha and Ben Janssens Oriental Art held their
first joint exhibition. The unusual formula of juxtaposing contemporary art
with ancient Chinese works of art was well received. The success of the
exhibition has encouraged us to stage another such event. The 2003 edition,
entitled In Time, has a slightly different focus, and for the first time
includes works in two very different media, ceramic and video. Whereas last
year the Chinese works of art were chosen by the artists who took part in
the exhibition, we decided this year to put together the objects and
contemporary works ourselves, in order to further explore what we regard as
contextual relationships between the two.
The exhibition includes the work of six internationally recognised women
artists. The sculptor Julia Mangold and painter Jill Baroff, who both
participated in Minimal Art  Ancient China are once again represented,
although their work differs from that included last year. The Norwegian
video artist Eline McGeorge, who lives and works in the UK, contributes a
triptych of mesmerizing digital animations. The slender forms of Anna
Silverton's stoneware vases echo those of ancient Chinese ceramics, which
becomes evident when they are shown together, as they are in this catalogue.
Also included in the exhibition are two well-established American artists,
Joan Witek and Joan Waltemath, who have both produced work based on
geometrical compositions, an aspect that is reflected in the objects that
accompany their pieces.
A catalogue accompanying the exhibition has been published and is available
from both galleries as well as on the internet.
