Metanoia. The exhibition showcases sculptures that are brought to life by taking "some kind of journey that a person does into the dark areas of his/her own psyche" as a base.
Sasmazer lives and works, both literally and symbolically, between Istanbul and Berlin, and her works are influenced by both cities with their divergent cultures and rhythms. She touches upon and sheds light on the role of women in both societies, as well as on the alleged innocence of children who, especially in the contemporary metropolis, are perhaps not as harmless as we sometimes pretend ot like to think. No longer guiltless children, but also not disenchanted adults, Sasmazer‘s figures are ambivalent and thus act as psychological objects of projection for our own (self-)perception.
METANOIA
The 3rd solo show of Yasam Sasmazer “METANOIA” will be on display at the MSFAU TOPHANE-I AMIRE CAC SINGLE DOME HALL between January 11th-30th, 2014. The exhibition which showcases sculptures that are brought to life by taking “some kind of journey that a person does into the dark areas of his/her own psyche“ as a base can be visited between 11th and 30th of January.
“Metanoia”, means spiritually a drastic transformation, a reconstruction and healing. This journey that a person takes in order to change himself, his mind and his heart points in the direction of a spiritual awakening.
The dark side of our egos, our shadow, is the animalistic and primitive side of our personality that we try to repress and hide. Carl Gustav Jung mentions that “The shadow is everything we are that we would not like to be.” It is always destructive to be confronted with this dark side of ours but a person who has seen his own shadow once can never stay the same. He changes, transforms…
For Yasam Sasmazer the effort of confronting the shadow and to internalize it through her sculptures expresses some kind of spiritual and mental transformation, “Metanoia”.
Yasam Sasmazer who searches the dualities of human inner worlds and walks in the dark corridors of the state of being human, expresses the themes of ‘inner darkness’ and trying to get to know ones’ self through the notion of shadow and adult sculptures.
The shadows that were more of fantastic and fictional components of Sasmazer’s previous works, become much more complicated as her figures become adults. In this series where the shadows wrap the figures, spread into the space and extend into the third dimension, both the figures and their shadows are more dense, dark and even lack deliberateness by the effect of being adults and growing up.
"In the end, Yaşam Saşmazer's oeuvre touches our heart, soul and mind, as it expresses deep artistic thought and strong feeling. Her sculptures are intellectually challenging and aesthetically attractive as well as emotionally moving and sometimes even arousing. So, the work is a great example of a balanced relationship between craft and concept, psychological and socio-political matters, as well as private stories and common history. Her figures reveal the impact of the unconscious and hidden in our psyche on our life. They also sometimes even present ways of how to deal with the various shadows of our life. Especially the current series proves that Yaşam Saşmazer's artistic journey into the depth of the human mind, as well as her critical review of socio-political issues, and socio-cultural conformations is a stringent, consistent and increasingly powerful ongoing process. That is why we can hope to see more great works from her in the near future."
